And just when you thought we've had them all...
...More end-of-the-year lists: The Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Ohio listed Hail to the Thief among its albums of the year. "The quintet continues to dabble in electronica while clinging to rock, dividing listeners along familiar lines. Those who genuinely dislike the group are excused, but the ultra-avant-garde who ''used to like Radiohead'' ought to get off their thrones and strap on some headphones -- the band still delivers tunes with equal propensity to send hearts racing and to stop them cold."
At Rough Trade Records, Hail to the Thief came in at number 52 on their Top Albums of 2003.
Hail to the Thief came in at number three on the Triple J listener's Top 10 albums of 2003.
The Hershey Chronicle have HTTT listed on number three: Difficult, angular and challenging, Hail to the Thief is not the return to rock many had predicted. However, it is a great survey and a synthesis of the band's recent experiments in techno and art-rock. That unholy union could be an unlistenable mess in lesser artists' hands; in Radiohead's, it results in new classics like the hypnotic "Where I End and You Begin" and the subtly-melodic "There There," the band's best single in years.
The Korea Times has the album listed as one of the best of 2003 as well.
The New York Times did the same: "Raising the stakes again after two albums of introspection, Radiohead stirs its sonic experiments into new ravaged anthems, engaging the outside world again with perplexity and rage."
'There There' was #37 on John Peel's 2003 festive 50 list, broadcast on BBC Radio 1.

Radiohead in Spin's Top 10 of 2003
Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thief' was rated at number 10 for the top 40 best albums of the year in Spin magazine. Here's what they said about it...
"Radiohead records aren't truly avant-garde; however, they're as close to experimental as albums by major rock bands get. Radiohead recerods aren't really commercial, either; however they're as accessible as deconstructed, unconventional pop music can possibly be. Basically, Hail to the Thief is the kind of album that forces you to say "however" a lot; but not overtly so; it's clever, but it's not funny; it's not unfathomable, but it's also not for people who don't like to think about the music they buy." [thanks David]
Same goes for Jam! Music: ""Hail" emcompasses styles from Radiohead's previous albums, but manages to have its own unique appeal. "Go To Sleep" and "There There" will go down as some of the best material they have ever recorded. " [thanks Cristina]
The Philidelphia Inquirer's year in review mentioned the album as well: "It's another installment in the serial psychodrama Thom Yorke and His Invisible Demons. It's another not-so-heroic struggle involving rock's paranoid android and the wolves at his door, another song cycle devoted to the gap between "Where I End and You Begin" sung in the key of ambivalence. It's also the most unabashedly tuneful Radiohead effort in years, a thrill ride that lurches through moments of quiet reflection and gnawing frustration, and then, when you least expect it, slams you head-first into some giant-sized emotional torment."

Hail To The Thief nr. 5 in Time Magazine
Time Magazine had Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thief' at number 5 on their list of best albums of 2003: Fans mourned because it was neither a rock-saving opus nor a pot-clanging ambient experiment, but Radiohead's sixth album was the first to fuse all of their various incarnations into something warm and cohesive.

... and even more 'end-of-the-year' lists
'Hail to the Thief' ended up at #83 on Billboard's top 200 selling albums of 2003. The album was placed #5 on the billboard's critic/artist poll top 10 list of the year and Billboard's writers results can be found here.
CMJ have 'Hail to the Thief' listed at nr. 3: "Although by most accounts, the beleaguered Field Day festival — ultimately held on a cold, rainy June day at New Jersey’s Giants stadium — was a complete washout, those who braved the weather long enough to see Radiohead’s triumphant headlining set were far from disappointed. A large part of that set consisted of songs from the impressive Hail To The Thief, which, while not a complete return to the guitar-driven antics of The Bends or OK Computer, is still closer to Pink Floyd than Squarepusher. Fourteen tracks of political anger, aggressive guitars, thumping drum machines and lyrics about… rabbit disease — Radiohead albums are never the happiest things, and Thom Yorke can be downright surly at times, but Hail remains full of the kind of positive energy that inspires action. It was no surprise that the disc ascended to the top of CMJ’s charts in 2003 (the band could release a recording of its members tuning their instruments, and it would be heralded as a masterpiece), but it was nice to see that this was hardly a case of the emperor’s new clothes." ...and some more 'end-of-the-year' lists
'Hail to the Thief' is mentioned in the Ottawa Citizen (Canada), in the section titled, "Our Favorite Discs": "Hail to the Thief - Radiohead: the 14 tracks are woven like a thick and exotic cloak around the plaintive, soaring voice of Thom Yorke, who reaffirms his place as the gloomiest gus in music."
German magazine "Spiegel" has named 'Hail to the Thief' as one of the most important records of the year.
In the January issue of Q (UK) 'Hail to the Thief' ranked at number 11 in their "fifty best albums of the year": "Radiohead's xixth album met with a mixed response - those hoping for a return to stadium rock values were disappointed by the glitchy intricacies of 2+2=5, while technoheads who took Kid A and Amnesiac as proof that rock is dead can't have appreciated stadium singalongs like Go To Sleep. Still, the are classic Yorke moments throughout - There There was a fantastic single while Sail To The Moon is the quintessential modern ballad, at once ironic and tragic. Radiohead fan's will debate the "Better than Ok Computer? Better than Amnesiac?" questions endlessly - the rest of us can slip on our headphones and marvel."

'There There' in Pitchfork's singles list
Pitchfork Media named 'There There' the 13th best singles of 2003: "With tunnel echo magnifying fluctuating drum sounds and lackadaisical zigzagging guitars layered over a mercurial bassline, Radiohead's opening mission statement of 2003 made a case for two directions: a clear affinity for the comfortable past of their traditional rock background and the natural progression of a maturing stadium rock giant. Thom Yorke shuttles his fragile voice between fretting regret and ambivalent disdain, along with trademark esoteric lyrics. An example of accessible rock that's not only forward-thinking and powerful, but altogether gorgeous.".
Pitchfork slotted HTTT as the 4th best album of 2003.
Hot damn, them epochal Brits done trucked over to Hollywood and dropped another compelling puzzle-piece on the stunted grad student in us all! This episode's secret word is "aphasia," as our fave quintet plods exquisitely through a batch of literate and almost standoffish anti-pop anti-anthems about the failure of utterance, as if channeling Reagan's delirium. The booklet's phrase-map artwork, the album's four titles, and the songs' double-namedness initiate a thematic bombardment that quickens throughout the 1984-referencing "2 + 2 = 5", the tongue-tied "Myxomatosis", and the hallucinatory "Scatterbrain". Thom Yorke alludes to the Bible, Homer, fairy tales, and The Stepford Wives, but this disc's closest hardbound kin is Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape, the protagonist of which mumbles at reel-to-reel recordings of himself in his fallout hut. See Hail's pro-bunker stance, its spliced dialogue songs, its schizophrenic chants (THE RAINDROPS THE RAINDROPS and little babies' eyes eyes eyes), its line about erasing all tapes, and its final line before the album ends with seven seconds of silence: "Turn this tape off."
Beckett's Krapp was alone, but Hail's wailer has children to be paranoid about. Caught up in the old trick of how some things are worth worry, while worry remains worthless, Yorke sounds as deflated as a teat ransacked by its oblivious litter. When the band's not consigned to lurch through nullabies that evoke offloaded Les Paul DNA, they meticulously rollick like fingerpainting automatons, or, during the squall of "There There", as if submitting a soundtrack for Edvard Munch's 'The Scream' in... 'Shaft'. The breakdown from The Beatles' "I Want You" is wrung neurotic to supply the backing for "A Wolf at the Door"'s taxman-citing panic-rant about calling the cops (consult Go Home Productions' mash-up of "Karma Police" and "A Day in the Life"). "We Suck Young Blood" is seasoned with off-time zombie handclaps: a Down With People hymn for the dawn of brand-name pill organizers. The production is Howard Hughes hermetic; just as early Springsteen seems the perfect warmth for vinyl, Radiohead match the coldness of CDs and the even more abstract MP3. Still, a new sentimentality and reliance on cliche have emerged: Kid A is growing up, and Yorke has begun to care about the lil' motherscratcher. Thus his band is becoming our ham-fistedly intricate Pink Floyd." [thanks Doug]

MGF were offered to open for Radiohead
Machine Gun Fellatio's recent US visit involved a flattering offer to open for Radiohead at Madison Square Garden - an offer eventually overruled by Radiohead's record company - and an unfortunate encounter with a mechanical bull. "The whole Radiohead thing put me in a crazy mood," says von Loopin Stab. "To be honest, there was quite a lot of alcohol and possibly a lot of rock cocaine involved, too. I was just on a bender and there was this cowboy bar on Sunset Boulevard. "So we go in there and I'm completely off my tits. Invincible. I'm feeling 100 feet tall. So I decide to ride the mechanical bull. I didn't know at the time, but I'd chipped the top off my collar bone and there were all these fragments sticking straight into my muscle." [from smh.com.au]

Reviews
A review of Monday's Maida Vale show is online at 3voor12.nl (in Dutch).
Rolling Stone mentions, in their listing of "Hail..." as one of the top fifty albums of the year; "Hail wasn't exactly Radiohead's anticipated return to rock; instead, the band simply turns down the volume on the electronics and lets the songwriting drift to less chaotic, more atmospheric realms. But on the singles "There, There" and "Go to Sleep," the album comes into scary focus: guitars swell to arena-worthy crescendos, supporting songs that demand repeated exposure to reveal themselves. And on this past summer's tour, Radiohead proved again that they're the best band in the world." [thanks Jonathan]
And there's a review of one of Christopher O'Riley's gigs in the Palm Beach Post. The show featured some Radiohead songs in the encore. Have a read.

'Spin' reviews Merce Cunningham ballet
Posted today at Spin.com. A bit late, but here you go: a review of the Merce Cunningham ballet with music from Radiohead: "The piece began with Jonny Greenwood’s lonely electronic keyboards; bell tones and violin drones rose up, then bits of a religious broadcast, then Yorke’s wordless vocals, all looped and blurred. Dancers in sheer soot-gray-and-white leotards twisted around one another, creating a gorgeous human geometry. Only rarely, as when a woman repeatedly fell backward into her partner’s arms -- recalling one of those psychotherapeutic trust exercises -- did gestures rise beyond the abstract. This was Rorschach art, open to any interpretation. Toward the end, as Yorke pogoed wildly over a studio-size mixing board in the pit, you could see him indulging his own interpretation: that he was rocking the decks at the coolest dance club on the planet." B-sides album to be released?
Jonny Greenwood talked to BANG magazine about the Bodysong soundtrack, as well as Radiohead: Bodysong may have an impact on new Radiohead material, Greenwood suggests, after the soundtrack project saw him work with string quartets and jazz bands. "It's given me confidence to chance my arm in the studio and not feel paranoid about wasting time."
He expects the band to begin work on new tracks when they finish touring next summer, although new songs are already being written. Before then, Radiohead plan to release a collection of Hail To The Thief remixes, including efforts by Cristian Vogel, Kid Koala, Madlib, Four Tet and Thom Yorke's own new version of 'We Suck Young Blood'.
"They sound great," Greenwood confirms. "I would hope it be released at the beginning of next year, but we really don't know whether to make it a whole record or a series of smaller releases, so we've been talking about that in idle moments recently. But then we've also been talking about doing a B-sides record as well. We talk and talk!" [thanks caught by the karma police]

The culture section of today's Sunday Times reviewed the album as well: "PROFUNDITY OF THE WEEK - Birth. Life. Crap. Horror. Old age. Death. Why bother? Ugh. Whatever. Hmm, can't wait for Bodysong 2. Bodysong, 18, 82 mins, Human cells. Squirming tadpoles. Conception. Embryos. Little heads, little fingers. Plonk, plink - sombre piano music from that bloke in Radiohead (Johnny [sic] Greenwood). Split screens. Pregnant woman in bath. Women in labour. Babies emerging from the - oh, dear, I think I'm going to faint. The writer/director Simon Pummell has taken images from newsreels, cinema and home movies and tried to say something big about the human condition: it's a bit Desmond Morris goes avant-garde. Here are smiling African babies! Cut to Victorian tots having fun. Here comes the sex bit. Oh, dear, images of horror and human suffering, Nazi Germany, Vietnam, mushroom cloud, death, silence - the end. - Cosmo Landesman
Overall rating - "1 star - So-so" [thanks Rachel]

'Hot Press' reviews Dublin gig
There's a review of Radiohead's Dublin gig (Dec. 3) at HotPress.com.: "Dunno if there were too many Red Bulls in the backstage rider this evening, but something has given Thom Yorke wiiings. In fact, along with Thom’s frantic making-shapes-in-the-air dancing, there are many factors to indicate this is not a garden-variety Radiohead experience... Phil Selway on the sampler, doing some unforseen lounge-y shuffle, Colin Greenwood actually laughing, Ed O’Brien looking as if he’s having fun. Perhaps it’s the imminent arrival of two new Radiohead babies, but tonight there is an unmistakeable air of frivolity in the Point. In fact, the show feels surprisingly intimate, a space too small and inadequate to contain the band’s gargantuan genius." [read the rest at hotpress.com, thanks Ivan]

Moby on his 'Creep' covers
Moby was guest DJ this morning on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" with Nic Harcourt, where he played his cover of "Creep" from the Glastonbury festival. Moby has performed the song on many of his live shows. He readily admitted he can't sing it near as well as Mr. Yorke. For those who want to hear it again, check www.kcrw.com/mbe. [thanks Derek]

As Thom hinted at the Guardian online chat last week, Radiohead seem to release a new DVD in April 2004. NME mentioned in their Radiohead Live Special that the DVD will feature video from the last album, live footage from the 2003 tour and material as shown on Radiohead.tv.

Ballet with Radiohead score in UK
The Merce Cunningham ballet scored by Radiohead is set to come to the UK. Earlier this year the band and Sigur Rós put together the improvised soundtrack for 'Split Sides', and performed it live at the show's premiere in New York in October. The ballet is now set to come to the London Barbican in October 2004, although a spokesperson for Radiohead told nme.com the group probably won’t be playing live. Instead, the show will use a remixed soundtrack of the material recorded in New York. The Sun reported that “The show is very moving and the band are chuffed to be involved. They say they would love to perform live in London if their diary permits. Merce loves their music and is one of the most renowned guys in his field. This show should be very big.” Barbican head of theatre, Louise Jefferys, said if Radiohead did play live she would expect them to bring in a big new audience of dance and rock fans. She said: “We are all really excited to be presenting this work which brings together the dance icon Merce Cunningham with pop icons Radiohead. “It is a unique collaboration which will attract a diverse audience. It is a wonderful and intriguing work we are proud to have co-commissioned.” [from nme.com & the sun]

XFM reviews Earl's Court show
XFM reviewed the Earl's Court show of November 26th: "There was a time when Thom Yorke cracking a joke onstage would’ve been met with the quaking of the earth imploding in on itself and the skies turning black. Similarly, asking the crowd to clap-along (“it’ll make the song sound brilliant!”) would once have been as likely as the Queen inviting the Daily Mirror’s editorial team round for tea."
