The Sun: Radiohead tipped to perform at Live Aid II

U2's Bono is planning a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts to raise money to help ease third world debt, backed by Prime Minister Tony Blair. The Sun newspaper said on Monday. Bob Geldof, the brains behind the original concert to relieve famine in Ethiopia, will also be involved, the paper said, citing British government sources. Radiohead (together with Oasis, Robbie Williams and Coldplay are tipped to perform at Live Aid II. The 1985 event raised 60 million pounds ($110.2 million) with simultaneous concerts in Britain and the United States. [from reuters]

UPDATE: Bob Geldof denied on Monday that he had teamed up with Bono for a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts. Geldof said in a statement: "I told the Sun this afternoon it was not true. This only serves to undermine the concerted efforts of those concerned with the tragedy of poverty in Africa. However, if the Prime Minister wants to organize a Live Aid II, then good luck to him," Geldof added. [from reuters again]

Rachmaninoff isn't Radiohead, dude!

In an Almeda Times article on how to get more young listeners into classical music, Radiohead are mentioned:

...In fact, pop culture aficionados can be just as snobbish as any classical music fan ever was. Consider the band Radiohead, whose angsty and ornate music is accompanied by a solemn pretentiousness far surpassing many a classical ensemble. Radiohead is one of the most revered bands of the very hip. So no, those in thrall to the Strokes or Interpol are not being kept away from orchestral concerts by elitism. It is only the content of the music -- the aesthetics -- that differ.

Which brings up an inflammatory and un-PC question: Is one genre of art superior to another? I have no grudge against contemporary popular music (with the possible exception of Radiohead). It's ephemerally and ironically fun at its best. But classical music at its best offers works that are dense with meaning, hard to immediately grasp and therefore more interesting for a longer time...

Parrots Nest II or the the end of Radiohead...

Let's keep this one short: click! [that's entertainment]

Update: just for the people who don't know about Parrots Nest. Parrots Nest was the biggest hoax ever. And this is most likely version 2. Do not take this too seriously. Please read the news from the past few days and you'll see that Radiohead haven't decided on their future yet, but they're just on a break.

Vote for Radiohead on C4's greatest videos

On channel 4 in the uk, they will be showing a programme documenting the '100 greatest music videos', and they have just opened the voting on their website. Radiohead have 3 songs ('just', 'street spirit (fade out)' and 'no surprises') listed that you can vote for, although if there are others you think should be on the list of nominations, you can write in and they may be added. [thanks david]

Phil: "We’ve no new songs, not one.”

Channel 4's teletext have an interview with Jonny & Phil at the Ivor Novello awards. “International Achievement? That’s worryingly like one of those ‘you’re on your way to retirement prizes'”. After two previous wins when they were unable to attend. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood along with brother Colin and Phil Selway are at the Ivors. “It’s good that the Ivor's recognise writing” adds Jonny. “That’s were it all starts, experimenting, making mistakes, breathing new life into what we do. Sorry, it's very dull interviewing us at the moment. We really have nothing new to say as we’re on holiday”.

Having picked up an International Achievement award, Phil Selway was asked about Radiohead’s future: "It’s not very rock and roll, but we all have families, so we’ll be with them until at least the end of summer. We need to press the reset button on everything before we work out what to do next. We’ve no new songs, not one.”

There’s been talk that Radiohead’s next release would be a series of EP’s rather than an album is that something that the dapper Phil can confirm?

“Sorry” he chuckles. “Again, we simply don’t know. We could do the EP’s, we may do an album, it could be a regular release, it might be just via the web. After a year in tour, we need to not think about the band for a couple of months.”

Ok. Any plan to run another Marathon?

“That I can say. NO!” [thanks Ed.]

Radiohead recharging their batteries

Speaking from the Ivor Novello awards yesterday (Thursday) Radiohead told the BBC they're taking their time before making any more music. The band won the International Achievement award at the posh ceremony but Ed said that the honour won't encourage them to get back into the studio just yet: "We just haven't made any firm plans about what we're going to do yet. We just wanted to get this past year out of our systems then sit down and once we've had some time to think about it, then actually make some decisions about what comes next."

"We're just recharging our batteries and we know that we want to come back and make some music together, hopefully in the not-too-distant future. But we just want to take our time and make sure it's the right time for us."

Radiohead win Ivor Novello award [updated]

Radiohead have won an award for International Achievement at the Ivor Novello awards today. The ceremony in London honours British songwriters, composers and music publishers, and took place at London's Grosvenor House.

The BBC talked to Jonny Greenwood to find out why, although they normally avoid award ceremonies, they turned out to collect their International Achievement award: "This award ceremony is more about song writing which is something we enjoy very much as a band - watching songs change and having Thom turn up with songs that we can either finish up or ruin. That's the most core process for us, in terms of being in a band, so anything that celebrates that is great." [thanks Shaun & Ed.]

Pawel's full band versions hit NME

Pawel Osmolski and ateaseweb.com are in this weeks NME (out today). Still don't know what this is about? Have a read:

Radiohead have completed two new songs despite the band not knowing about them.

A Fan, Pawel Osmolski, has recorded and released two 'OK Computer'- era tracks on the Internet, 'Big Ideas (Don't Get Any) and 'Follow Me Around', using Thom Yorke's vocals and guitar and simply adding the other instruments himself.

Speaking to NME, Osmolski said: "I've always been a huge fan and I was always interested in their live concerts. So i got hold of some of their bootlegs and listened to the stuff they never really put out. I thought I'd do a little experiment and put all of the other instruments on them. I never intended to upload it all, but my mates told me I should see what people think and I've been really surprised from the feedback I've got- it's really cool."

The tracks are available to download through Radiohead fan site www.ateaseweb.com and Osmolski is currently working on a version of 'Big Boots'.

He said: "What I'm doing is providing people with a slightly more enhanced bootleg, built around that live feel. Thom said once that he'd like to see 'Big Ideas' performed by someone else. I think Thom might be quite interested in what I've done."

Radiohead's Oxford Playhouse performance

Members of Radiohead were joined by a star-studded cast at the Oxford Playhouse last night (May 23) as they covered 'Love is all around' for charity. As previously reported, drummer Phil Selway, bassist Colin Greenwood and guitarist Ed O' Brien were set to back actor Bill Nighy for the performance in their hometown.

The song was the finale to a night of the arts at the venue which has been organised by ’Gosford Park’ actor Tom Hollander in aid of Helen House, Britain’s first children’s hospice. The hospice was founded in the ‘80s and offers respite care, terminal care and bereavement support.

Fans at the performance have told nme.com that the performance was far more chaotic than anyone would have expected. One revealed: "It was fantastic! It was right at the end of the evening, and they said for our finale we have three members of Radiohead. They started performing the song with Nighy and then all the people who had appeared earlier in the evening came onto the stage!"

Stars on the stage included comedians Steve Coogan, Griff Rhys Jones and Hugh Laurie, Mel and Sue, Jamie Theakston and Rory Bremner. [from nme.com]

Radiohead drummer Phil Selway turned 37 today. Best wishes to him. As you all know, Phil will be playing in Oxford tonight with Ed, Colin and Bill Nighy to perform 'Love is all around'... For those who managed to get a ticket, a 'Happy Birthday' would make a nice encore.

Jonny interview in Computer Music Journal

Here's an interview with Jonny Greenwood in the Computer Music Journal, where he talkes about recording, electronics and the Ondes Martenot. Below is the part of the material that contains fragments of Jonny's 'direct communication' with the magazine. [thanks Juliet & Natalia]

A fascinating feature present in Radiohead arrangements is a pronounced use of vibrato and continuous pitch changes to generate sensual backdrops. Prominent examples are the impressive orchestral string glissandi of How to Disappear Completely (KidA), particularly the unsteady reeling from 5:04 to 5:24, and the gliding siege of Ondes Martenot underlying Where I End and You Begin (HTTT).

Mr.Greenwood scored the former, and the orchestral repertoire is one of his many enthusiasms:

- We haven’t started manipulating sounds of orchestral instruments. I just feel that there are still so many sounds and textures to get out of orchestras that are unlike anything, and can be far more disturbing/magical than most digital manipulation. I think part of me disengages with a sound when I can hear it’s digital. Some people seem to think the orchestra, as a piece of technology, is somehow past it. But microtonal string music and choirs and suchlike are far more affecting to me, because it’s simultaneously natural and unnatural. As a band we listen to a lot of Penderecki.

Radiohead to perform 'Love is All Around'?

This is from British newspaper 'The Independent': "This sunday night, the audience at the Oxford Playhouse will witness a unique musical alliance as Radiohead (Ed, Phil & Colin) team up with the actor Bill Nighy to perform the saccharine Love is All Around .

The tune will be a suitably quixotic finale to an extraordinary evening that had been one of the best-kept secrets in the arts. It is the brainchild of the actor Tom Hollander, star of Gosford Park , who has assembled talent from theatre, film, comedy and music for Childish Things , a comedy review."

Proceeds from the show go to Helen House, Britain's first children's hospice. The Oxford institution, which celebrated its 21st birthday last year, is funded entirely by charitable donations and needs £4,000 every day to run its eight beds. It cares for 150 families.

More on Jonny Greenwood's BBC work

As reported earlier, Jonny Greenwood has been hired by BBC Radio 3. Here are some quotes from Radiohead manager, Bryce Edge, who said the appointment will allow him to "learn how an orchestra works." Greenwood is expected to be in the role for the next three years.

His manager Bryce Edge said the appointment would allow him to "learn how an orchestra works". "He will have access to the resources, the archives, the scores, and most importantly the BBC Concert Orchestra," he told BBC News Online.

"He will be able to workshop things he has written with the full orchestra. And it is an incredibly flexible arrangement," he said. Mr Edge said Greenwood is committed to writing a single piece for the BBC, but there was no time limit for this.

"It could take him two years or six months, and it can be as short or as long as he wants," he said. Greenwood would continue to be a member of Radiohead and his BBC work would be fitted around the band's recording and touring.

Mr Edge said Greenwood was very excited at his new role. "He's going to learn orchestra skills that he would never, ever get, and access to a really amazing orchestra.

"Roger Wright, the head of Radio 3, has a passion for new music," said Mr Edge, adding he believed Greenwood would write more pieces for the station.
"He's someone with a lot of talent but he'll have a lot to learn," Mr Edge said. [from BBC, thanks Tim]

Jonny Greenwood hired by BBC

Todays Sunday Times (UK), reports that Jonny Greenwood has been hired to produce modern classical pieces for the BBC concert orchestra. Jonny Greenwood will be paid to produce modern classical pieces for the BBC concert orchestra. The appointment is an experimental move for the BBC, which is attempting to shake off the stuffy image of classical music.
Greenwood, 32, who composes Radiohead songs with singer Thom Yorke, is not trained in classical music. A viola player in his youth, he went to Oxford University to read music but lasted just three weeks.
Although he does not take up the three-year post until next year, it is understood he will write for BBC festivals, the Proms and possibly theme tunes.
Radio 3 is expected to broadcast most of Greenwood's new work. Roger Wright, the station's controller, played a key role in persuading him to take the job. Wright has made Radio 3 more eclectic, introducing jazz and world music.
Wright siad: "The great joy about this deal is that Jonny is not a classical composer. He has a great talent and we want to give him the oppertunity to simply be creative. "We want him to try things out with brass and string, to experiment. Anything goes and we are all enormously excited."

Greenwood said he was looking forward to his new role. "The key thing for me is beginning a close relationship with an orchestra. Orchestras are very magical things." The introduction of new music to the BBC has met resistance from traditionalists. They believe Wright's Radio 3 is too keen to wage a ratings war with its commercial rival Classic FM and is focusing too much on "alternative" music. Michael White, the music critic, said Greenwood's appointment was "very questionable." Greenwood replaces Anne Dudley, a classical performer. [thanks Gavin]

Hail To The Terminator

Have you synched Radiohead with a movie yet? Some people have... actually a lot of people have. There's a whole database at SynchronicityArkive.com. They try to "synchronize a movie with an unrelated music album, to produce a new experience unintended by either work." Radiohead has been mentioned numerous times. Have a look. It could look like this:

The Ingredients: Video: The Terminator, 1984, Audio: Hail To The Thief
The Setup:Program the cd to play Tracks 1-10,13.
Start the album 1 minute 53seconds before Arnie drives the car into the police station (try 0:55:09 for the start time if you have a timer).
CHECKPOINT: if you have it right the guitars after the lyric 'because' (Track 1 at 1:53) should sync with the car crashing through the wall.
Ends at credits. [thanks Nick]

"I have an obsession with Radiohead," Reid says. What kind of musician says his obsessions run from Miles Davis to Radiohead? A unique one.

Big Ideas (don't get any) full band version

Earlier this year ateaseweb.com posted a full band version of Follow me Around. This recording was done by Pawel Osmolski, who used Thom Yorke's vocals and acoustic guitar and added other instruments himself. The track was immensely popular and even made it to the top of Q Magazine's playlist.

Now, Pawel gave another unreleased Radiohead track the same treatment: 'Big Ideas (don't get any)' aka 'Nude'. The song, originally composed way back in 1996 during the OK Computer era is one of the fan's favourites. Pawel started off with a mix from a live gig recording at Akasaka Blitz, Tokyo (23-01-1998). Pawel: "It was just Thom and his acoustic, so it made things easy in the sense that I could work with it in the same way that I approached Follow Me Around."

Pawel has recorded these mixes are purely for the fans to enjoy: "Seeing as it seems unlikely that Radiohead would put these tracks out, I took the initiative to try and recreate them from live performances. Follow Me Around started off as just an experiment, so I was really surprised with the reaction it got. It was because of all the encouragement and support from you people that I decided to carry on making more mixes."

The atease:loophole forum features several of Pawel demo's. Pawel: "I was originally going to release Big Boots first but I decided to leave that for a bit until I got Big Ideas complete. Thom's vocals and acoustic guitar weren't edited to a set-tempo this time round, instead I decided to go with the flow from the performance to give it a more live feel.

The whole mix was produced at my home computer studio using a MIDI/Audio editing suite called Cubase SX2. I used the Native Instruments B4 organ to replicate what Jonny plays throughout the track. I also used my V-Amp Pro effects module for Ed's rythmic backing and the loud outro section.
I listened mostly to the San Fransisco performance as a basis for recreating the full-band effect, I didn't want to copy it note for note though, so I added extra bits and changed some of the way the instruments worked together. Mainly the addition of lots more harmonies."

"If Thom gets round to hearing my mixes of both tracks, I'd be intrigued to know what he thinks of them. Now that Big Ideas is out of the way, I'm going to try and finish Big Boots as soon as possible, then probably move onto some other unreleased tracks in the future. The past couple of months though, I've been working considerably hard on putting my own album together."

Pawel will most likely update the mix a bit. Until then, listen to Pawel's 'Big Ideas' here: www.ateaseweb.com/pawel

Clinic on Radiohead

In an interview with Lawrence.com Clinic frontman Ade Blackburn talked about touring with Radiohead. (Clinic supported Radiohead on their 2000 tour):

How irritating is it to tour with Radiohead?
I actually found it very easy to tour with Radiohead just because the whole setup between the band and the people that they work with is just easygoing; perhaps a lot more easygoing than smaller gigs or other support kind of situations we've been in, because I don't really think they've got anything to prove so there's no egos involved.

So there aren't legions of robotic fans screaming, "Who is this band that is preventing us from seeing Radiohead?"
(laughs) We kind of saw it as more of being the obvious underdogs, and [since] people were mainly going to watch Radiohead, we had nothing to lose. And I think the Radiohead audience -- as well as some people being kind of aware of what we'd done -- I think they're an intelligent audience, and they seemed pretty open to what we were doing, so it wasn't a case of being bustled offstage.

You've been called Radiohead's favorite band. Has this brought people out of the woodwork to kiss your asses?
Playing with Radiohead certainly, I think, made our name known, especially to people in America. As I say, with that type of audience, I think if they thought what we did was crap, then they'd soon pass on it, so I think that can get your initial foot in the door, but you have to prove yourself after that.

Jonny Greenwood interview in Undercover

Catching up on an interview with Jonny Greenwood for the Australian Undercover from last week. Some bits and pieces: Do you think as far as movies go that it's better to write things for the movie or in the case of say 'Vanilla Sky' which had 'Everything in its Right Place' have the song already written?

JG: Yeah you see, I've always said and always thought that it's always going to be better to write songs for a film, but Vanilla Sky was amazing, it worked. There's always going to be times when it works. I suppose what was annoying me was the whole thing, which I think is dying out, but it was certainly happening a few years ago, a big movie doing a bunch of rock hits and putting them on an album or soundtrack and there was the whole synergy of the rock soundtrack helping the careers of musicians all in one media circle, which is kind of naff really. Songs that aren't even on the film being on the soundtrack, remember all that?

TC: It's been six years since you've been here. It's been one hell of a long time. Where have you been, what have you been doing?

JG: We've been everywhere else. No, that's not entirely true. There are still places we've never been, like Korea and South America and we really should one day. So yeah, it's very hard to justify only coming three times in ten years, but like I said there are places that we've never been and we have people waiting for us there really. [thanks d e]

Radiohead featured in two Japanese magazines

Thom is on the cover of the June issues of 2 Japanese magazines, 'Rockin On' and 'Crossbeat'. 'Rockin On' has separate reviews of all 4 Japanese live shows, live shots, a lengthy interview with Thom, and several new pictures.

Crossbeat has a new interview with Thom, but all the pictures are old stock photos. Interestingly, Crossbeat is releasing a compilation of all their past interviews/material about Radiohead, much like the big UK magazines did last year. The title will be Crossbeat File Vol. 2 (Vol.1 was Red hot chili peppers). Price is about 1900 yen, or around $19 US. [thanks Alex]

What does Radiohead mean to the world?

There's an article on Radiohead, including an interview with Christopher O'Riley in the Philadelphia Enquirer: "This is some of the most challenging music being written anywhere," says Christopher O'Riley, the 48-year-old classical pianist who released an album of Radiohead songs, True Love Waits, that became a left-field hit. To prepare, he transcribed the originals note-for-note to assimilate facets of their architecture. Then, he says, he had to figure out how to replicate their orchestral layers and interconnected melodies alone at the piano.

After months of Radiohead immersion, he came away impressed.

"What's going on in this music is more than the verse and the chorus," O'Riley said from his home in Los Angeles. Radiohead "is thinking about form in ways that are similar to classical composers. Things don't always repeat the way you expect pop songs to repeat. They create this very specific Byzantine mosaic that is infinitely rich, all by itself, in the middle register of the music."

Brad Mehldau, who has recorded several Radiohead tracks on his albums, explained several years ago that his Radiohead treatments aren't typical covers. "What I'm attracted to is the tension" in the songs, "the long periods where the harmony is just one chord. The jazz thing is usually to play lots of notes when you get to a section like that, but if you resist and go in a more melodic direction, you find you can get beyond what they wrote. It becomes an improvisational idea off of a motif, but it's not really jazz, either. [Radiohead] creates atmospheres, and those can be reworked any number of ways." [thanks Kenton]

Thom working on a solo album?

Australian newspaper the Guide has interview with Colin Greenwood. Colin talks about Radiohead throughout the years, mentioning Creep ("We weren't trying to have a hit. It was all an accident."), Thom during the OK Computer tour (""It was very distressing. You don't want to be doing something with someone who doesn't want to be there."), Hail to the Thief ("I think it is the start of a new cycle for the band.") and the future: Greenwood has no clues about the next Radiohead record. He confirms Yorke has started work on a solo album. "We all have different agendas about what we want to do in Radiohead," Greenwood said. "I would like to see us try very different styles. I would like to see it go from acoustic to hard techno, with everything in the middle. But who knows? I would like to do something that captures our live energy as well." [Thanks Stephen]

Radiohead end tour at Coachella Festival

Radiohead played their last show of their 2004 tour in Indio, California at the Coachella Festival, headling on May 1st. Thom's voice has recovered after having to cancel their last Melbourne show on Tuesday. The band played a typical festival set with a lot of 'classics' in the main set. 'Creep' was not on the setlist, but was played because the band had "a few minutes to spare". 'Planet Telex' was played again after a 'Let Down' tease. Thom said: "It's up to you Jonny..." Jonny went for 'Planet Telex'. Check the full setlist below.

PS Apologies for the lack of updates the past weekend. I was enjoying the Coachella Festival with many others. Checking e-mail over here is a real pain, so it'll just take a while to get back on track. Thanks to those who said hi and the gang staying at the 'SuperAde' Motel! Anyway... two more days in LA. I will update the gigography as soon as I get back. Please keep sending your reviews in at reviews@ateaseweb.com. Thank you!
