Björk on Thom Yorke

Björk was interviewed in German music magzine 'Muzik Express' (September 2004 issue). Here's a translation of a part the article where Bjork talks about Thom Yorke:

In order to stop exhausting Björk with matters of the real world we for the last time move the conversation back to arts. Thom Yorke, so we tell her, claims that ever since their duet for Selmasongs he is very grateful to have learned from her not to fall into an emotional trap when singing an emotional song.
“He said that?”, she asks and calms down at once. “That is very flattering for me. And it is funny. Because I feel like I kind of learned the opposite from him. Well, maybe not the exact opposite. But I was very impressed that he took a full week to record the song although it is only three minutes long. He just wanted to hang around in the studio and sing the same bit over and over again. That is a kind of band-mentality because when you are working with others you always have to wait for precisely the right moment when everybody simultaneously are giving their best. I am used to working alone and am generally not of the opinion that something gets better if you sing it about 50 times. But Thom had just come around a difficult procedure, Radiohead had just spent a full year in the studio”, she explains and talks and talks and talks. [thanks no paranoia & cristina]

Okay Computer

Robby Road Steamer, who celebrates the release of his debut CD, "Okay Computer," is the brainchild of musician and comedian Rob Potylo. "It took off," he says, sitting on the first floor of the Hong Kong in Harvard Square with D'Amico after a Studio gig. "I was just making fun of all these things you see going on with hard-core and heavy metal - just the stupidest things would come out of these people's mouths, and they weren't trying to be funny."

On his album title's similarity to Radiohead's "OK Computer": "You know what? It wasn't done right the first time around, so let's bring it back to the USA where it belongs." [from the Boston Globe, thanks Alex]

Marr's influence on Radiohead

In a special limited edition of Mojo magazine on Morrissey and The Smiths, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr gave this answer when asked he thought The Smiths' musical legacy was. Marr: "I Know we made a huge impression on the next generation of musicians. Ed O'Brien from Radiohead sat me down a couple of years ago in a barn, on top of a mountain in New Zealand and played me the then unreleased Knives Out. It was an unbelievable experience; I was beyond flattered and quite speechless- which takes some doing. He explained to me that with that song they'd tried to take a snapshot of the way I'd done things in The Smiths- and I guess you can hear that in it." [thanks Doug]

Something seemed familiar the first time Marilyn Manson saw Radiohead's "Karma Police" video. Actually, a lot of things. It turned out director Jonathan Glazer had pitched him the same concept months earlier and he passed. Keane on Phil Selway's Samaritans work

Drowned in Sound asked Tim from Keane: Where do you stand? Politics is politics, music is music?
Tim: "Bands like REM are still involved in local issues and the town they grew up in. I don’t know, we might get involved in things like that if we ever feel that we can bring something positive. I kind of admire people in a quiet way, like Phil Selway, from Radiohead, who goes and works for The Samaritans a couple nights a week and stuff, which is not something that’s made well known or pushed like part of their public profile."

Big Sib vs. Little Sib

In the latest issue of Blender Magazine [September 2004] there is a little side article about Sibling Rivalry. They compare the careers of Thom Yorke and Andy Yorke.

Little Sib: Andy Yorke
Big Sib: Thom Yorke
Little Sib's Career: Sure, Radiohead might be the most acclaimed rock band of the past decade, but what about Unbelievable Truth? Imagine Thom Yorke without the lazy eye or ... well, the talent, and you'll have Kid B, whose band released two barely noticed albums before breaking up in 2000.
The Winner: Big Sib

O'Riley tunes in Radiohead

The Calgary Herald have an interview with Christopher O'Riley:

After performing recitals that feature his own Radiohead transcriptions, it's not uncommon for American pianist Christopher O'Riley to be approached by pleasantly surprised listeners who ask, "Who is this Mr. Head -- and where can we get his music?"

O'Riley admits that in a successful career as an adventurous concert and recording artist with a broad repertoire, "the whole transcribing and arranging thing is something I haven't often done -- except when I've felt the need."

Since the release in 2003 of his first album (True Love Waits) based on the music of the British art-rock supergroup -- the pianist was initially turned onto the music of Radiohead with the seminal 1997 CD, OK Computer -- O'Riley's need to create original piano versions of Radiohead songs has continued to grow.

A second "Radiohead re-imagined" CD is in the works and scheduled for release by Sony before Christmas. [thanks Alex]

Justin Hawkins loves Radiohead

German online magazine VISIONS has an interview online with The Darkness singer Justin Hawkins where he talks about his earlier Radiohead bashing: "We've reached a point where almost everyone knows us. We are better known than some of the most famous Englishmen. But now some people are so hypersensitive about things we might have said. And suddenly they say I hate Radiohead. But that isn't true. I love Radiohead. And this really pisses me off." [thanks Artur for the translation]

'Help' album gets digital reissue

The legendary 'HELP' album is set for a new digital lease of life. Recorded and released in one week in September 1995, 'Help' was put together by the War Child charity to raise money for the victims of the war in the former Yugoslavia. It featured exclusive material from artists like Radiohead ('Lucky'), Manic Street Preachers, Orbital and Oasis, and became the fastest-ever Number One hit in UK music history.

Now, the album is to be reissued digitally to mark the launch of new charity download service warchildmusic.com. All 20 tracks plus artwork will be available for £3.50, with individual tracks for just 99p, when the site launches on Monday (August 9). Brand new music will be available in the coming months, and all profits will go to helping children in the world's most troubled regions.

Site director James Topham said: "Every track - and we're after everything from covers to acoustic versions, live recordings, alternative mixes, remixes or simply unreleased tunes - will be exclusive to Warchild Music. This is an ongoing project which we're sure will quickly become essential for artists and fans alike. Although the profits are going to charity, the site is all about music." [from nme.com]

Futureheads on Radiohead

In today's Guardian the Futureheads are interviewed: So this is what it's like to feel old: sitting in a London pub listening to two young musicians recall such rites of passage as buying Blur and Oasis singles at the height of 1995's chart war; playing Cigarettes and Alcohol at school concerts; having their worlds turned upside down by Thom Yorke and his friends. "Radiohead changed my life totally when I was a kid," one of them says. "When I bought OK Computer, I thought I was so cool. I felt like I was suddenly a student, and Oasis was secondary-school music." The over-30s might associate Paranoid Android and Subterranean Homesick Alien with the recent-ish past; for these people, living the high-velocity lives of early-twentysomethings, they are songs bound up with the dim and distant experiences of adolescence.
