NOFX on Radiohead
Kludge Magazine interviewed NOFX and asked them if they listen to Radiohead:
"I think Radiohead would be really good if they were good. Because when they have a good song it’s really nice, and there’s like two per album. I think Muse is way better than Radiohead, way better. Better songwriting."

Thom at Fylingdales
Thom Yorke held a speech at the Crucial National Demo at US defence base on the North York Moors at Fylingdales today. He talked for about 5 minutes in which he explained how he couldn't believe Tony Blair has just decided to let the US use the UK in their Star Wars program without even consulting us. He lead the march up to the radar chanting "Blair is a poodle, woof woof". [thanks Rick]
Neil Kingsworth, of Yorkshire CND, told the BBC: "It's been a brilliant atmosphere, pleasant and peaceful yet lively at the same time. A lot of people came because of Thom Yorke and it's wonderful that someone like him will take on such a complex issue. He told everyone how important it was for them to attend these protests and to keep plugging away as he cannot understand what right America has to be the policeman of the world."
...and one more picture. Besides Ricks pictures there also some preview pictures available at Wireimage. [thanks Alex]

Radiohead on trumpet
StyleWeekly (Richmond, Virginia) have an article on local trumpeter Rex Richardson online:
While he recognizes the difficulties for the average listener, he is often frustrated by the conservatism of fellow performers. “They dismiss anything that is too challenging, that they don’t know how to approach on their instrument. Even some music that is over 100 years old is still too new.” Expanding the soundscape is a musician’s responsibility. “If all you had ever heard was Beethoven,” Richardson says. “What would you do when you first heard Radiohead?”
Richardson and his bandmates are also planning an arrangement of a song from Radiohead’s “Amnesiac.” They’d presumably avoid track 10 from Radiohead’s “OK Computer” — a song called “No Surprises.” [full story]

Field Day 2005 gets permit from Town board
The Red Hook Town Board has granted approval for a mass gathering permit for a two-day music festival scheduled for July 2005 at the Greig Farm. Promoter Andrew Dreskin, who organized the June 2003 Field Day Festival in New York, has been mentioning Radiohead as headliners from day one in an attempt to get the Festival organized. The 2003 edition was troubled with many permit issues and had to move elsewhere only a couple of days before the event. As for the exact date of Field Day 2005, Dreskin said it would be either July 16-17 or 23-24. He said the date will be known within the next few weeks and is dependent upon the confirmation from the "headliner."

Thom joins REM onstage at London fanclub gig
Thom Yorke made an appearance onstage at a secret REM fanclub show in London last night. Yorke appeared onstage at the St James' Church halfway through the set to join Michael Stipe on vocals for a version of ’E-Bow The Letter’. Michael Stipe said: "We have a surprise for you", then Thom walked on. REM had to restart the song after Stipe claimed “I was so excited I fucked up the beginning”, before going on to apologise for swearing in church. The 200-strong invite-only audience gave Yorke a storming ovation. Thom had previously sung the same song onstage with REM at Vancouver Thunderbird Stadium in August last year and at The Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington in June 1998. Earlier this week, REM were joined onstage by Coldplay singer Chris Martin at Oxfam's Make Trade Fair benefit show in Hammersmith, London. The Telegraph interviews Samaritan Phil Selway
Another interview with Phil Selway on The Samaritans. Today, The Telegraph published an interview in their Health section:
Phil Selway, the drummer with Radiohead, does not seem the most obvious choice to be a spokesman for the Samaritans. His band - one of the biggest British rock acts of all time - are known for their melancholic, introspective music. One reviewer described their last album, Hail To The Thief, as "depressing, bleak, introverted and deeply pretentious", while another suggested that one of its tracks, I Will, "should have a public health warning aimed at manic depressives".
Yet 37-year-old Selway, who comes from Oxford, has been a volunteer for the Samaritans for nearly 20 years. This month, he is fronting the organisation's new Extreme Listening campaign, which aims to encourage more 18- to 24-year-olds to volunteer as Samaritans.
"I know people must think that Radiohead are a glum bunch," Selway says, laughing, when we meet at the Oxford branch of the charity. But actually, I think the music we make is very uplifting. It's cathartic. It's a good thing if a song allows you to sort through any feelings it provokes in you. And I suppose, in a way, music can play a very similar role to what we do at the Samaritans."

Phil on Samaritans again
Phil was quoted on his Samaritans work again. This time in 'This is Plymouth': "I was 19 when I became a Samaritans volunteer. The 17 years I spent providing support on the phone, email or face to face were a profound and rewarding experience for me. Listening is something that we do every day. Samaritans can hone that skill which, in turn, will make a positive difference to somebody else's life." [full story]

Phil Selway on new Samaritans recuiting campaign
Radiohead are putting their time off from recording and touring to good use – with drummer Phil Selway doing his bit for charity. Selway is currently supporting The Samaritans’ new volunteer recruiting campaign ‘Extreme Listening’. The emotional support group are aiming to encourage more young people aged 18-24 to volunteer. The Samaritans’ campaign is being carried out through postcards which are being distributed in Ibiza, as well as posters throughout the UK.
Selway explained: "There’s the common misconception that at that age you’re too young to do the work, you haven’t got enough experience, but age isn’t a barrier." The campaign aims to show the link between listening to music and expressing emotion. The Samaritans are suggesting that through becoming a volunteer, you get to experience another form of powerful listening.
The drummer, who has been a Samaritan for 18 years since joining university, said: "The experience that you need is to listen properly and effectively – give people the space to examine their own feelings. The whole Samaritans thing is about getting alongside someone who is really trying to understand what they’re going through." Selway added: "Working with The Samaritans has been a profound experience for me. It’s the knowledge that hopefully you’ve made a positive difference to someone’s life when they’ve been going through a crisis."
More information about the ‘Extreme Listening’ campaign.
Radiohead are currently taking a break from recording and touring, following an intensive schedule surrounding the release of the band’s last album ‘Hail ToThe Thief’. Selway said there are no plans as yet to go back into the studio. [from nme.com, thanks adam]

Blow Out: The Radiohead Exco
Grant Huling wrote in to say that he's teaching a class about Radiohead.
We'll learn their history and interpret their music at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, USA. In the class, I'll be exposing the students to nearly every song Radiohead has written, in addition to their music videos, Radiohead TV, MPIE, etc. With homework and class discussions, we'll talk about the themes, literature references, etc that permeate their music, from On a Friday through whatever leaks in the next few months.
Starting today (Sunday September 5th) you can sign up for "Blow Out: The Radiohead Exco" through Oberlin's Experimental College program, through which students and community members teach courses on more unconventional things.

'Vauxhall and I' & 'The Bends'
From The Inside Story: Morrissey and The Smiths (Mojo Special):
"Vauxhall and I, however, stands as fascinating aberation in Morrissey's solo canon. A moment when it really seemed as though something was about to happen, be it reinvention, retreat, or something even more final. Among its admirers when it was released were Radiohead- themselves undergoing somewhat of a crisis whilst attempting to eclipse the success of Creep.
"You can hear that album all over the Bends," said Thom Yorke in an interview last year. "It was all we listened to." [thanks my iron shlong]

Moby compares Radiohead to Democrats
The following was posted by Moby in his online journal on his official website yesterday, comparing Radiohead to the Democrats:
'you know what politics is/are like in the united states?
it's like pop-music and/or dating.
example a: pop-music.
republicans are like ashley simpson, and democrats are like radiohead. radiohead fans will forever be mystified as to why someone would buy an ashley simpson cd, but ashley simpson's handlers/managers understand what the lowest common denominator are looking for and they give it to them. radiohead fans think 'that disposable pop music is terrible, and someday people will see the error of their ways and buy radiohead cd's instead of ashley simpson cd's', meanwhile ashley simpson and her managers are selling millions of records.
