Thom on Make Trade Fair campaign
Thom Yorke commented on the photo shoot he did for the new Make Trade Fair poster campaign. All the shots, in which a celebrity is covered in foodstuffs, illustrate the plight of farmers who are systematically ‘dumped on’ by rich countries.
Yorke said: "How sweet does your chocolate taste when you know the producer in a country you will never see did not even get paid enough to feed his family? How sweet does it taste when you see the amount of profit a few multinational corporations make on it?
"How sweet does it taste, exactly, to know our own governments prevent these countries from ever getting off their knees and from ever being able to compete and get PAID, erecting barriers and then DUMPING on them from a great height whilst feigning concern? How delicious is it to know that sweet taste in your mouth is one of slavery, a nice new economic model? As it melts in your mouth, how sweet does your chocolate taste, now you know the suffering that it took to get to you?" [from nme]

Bono praises Radiohead
In the latest issue of Irish Hot Press magazine an interviewer told Bono from U2 the following: "One of the several reasons I have for disliking Radiohead is Thom Yorke harping on about how anti-corporate they are while happily letting EMI sell their new CD for twenty quid a pop."
Bono disagrees: "I have to say I'm the one who's always mourning the lack of Radiohead on pop radio because I long to hear Thom Yorke's voice and I long to hear a band as able as that up against, you know, Blue," he insists. "I can't blame Radiohead from pulling back from the fray. You have to have a stomach for it. It's a lot to swallow, but not your pride and not your dignity. Just the amount of work and annoyance and negotiating the machine called pop music. Sometimes you want to just make a more private, personal document of your life. Whatever they want to do, I will work on their road crew. If they had a cellist, I'd carry the cello on my back. They can do whatever they want in my book and it's alright with me. They're that good." [thanks Rishi]

Radiohead dvd tops Guardian's must have list
Radiohead's new DVD: 'The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time' topped the Guardian's must have list: "Last year, Radiohead thought that they were going to be given their own television station. This was, of course, merely a moment of power-crazed delusion, but the band have collected together 24 of the impressionistic, surreal, and frequently inspired short films they and their fans made for the nonexistent station for this DVD, using the films as a soundtrack to songs from their last album, Hail to the Thief. £12, only available from www.radiohead.com" [thanks Sarah]

Radiohead gets the academic treatment
As reporterd earlier, Joseph Tate will soon release his book on Radiohead. The Daily Barometer reports on the release:
"Teaching Radiohead in a Shakespeare class is a bit of a stretch, even though they did have a song on the 'Romeo and Juliet' soundtrack," Tate said.
"I've taught a little Radiohead this term in relation to Orwell's 'Animal Farm.' Their song 'Optimistic' references the book," Tate said. "We also watched their 'Paranoid Android' video in the context of censorship, since parts of it were censored in the U.S. and Canada."
Tate isn't the first in his field to use a band as focal point in his study. Tate says he has academic books on rock and music videos dating back 20 years.
"There's many more professors doing modern research than most students know," Tate said.
Some of Tate's students and faculty members know about his book. "At least with faculty members, the response is most often, 'Who is Radiohead?'" Tate said. "Or as someone asked me, 'So what is the music of Eraserhead like?'"

Radiohead & Copyright
Check out this piece from PlanetSimpson.com entitled 'Me & Radiohead & The (Necessary?) Evils Of Copyright':
I have here on my desk a photocopy of a "licence agreement" between my agent and one David C. Olsen, Director/Business Affairs, Warner Bros. Publications U.S. Inc., Miami, Florida. This document grants me "the non-exclusive right to print, publish, distribute and sell at [my] sole cost and expense" the lyrics from an attached schedule of "copyrighted musical composition(s)." Namely: the songs "The Bends," "Idioteque," and "I Might Be Wrong," all by Radiohead. The cost of securing these rights was "the sum of THREE HUNDRED FIFTY ($350.00) dollars, payable in US funds," plus "one (1) gratis copy of any publication in which the composition is utilized."
Make sure to read the rest though. And haven't we heard of Mr. Olsen before? [thanks for the link Juliet]

Nick Cave quoting Thom quoting Rachel
In an interview with Nick Cave on Swedish site SVT.se he mentioned Thom Yorke: "I was reading an interview with the singer from Radiohead... (interviewer: Thom Yorke)... Thom Yorke. And his girlfriend, or wife or whatver she is, had said something to him, which he quoted, which was, um, 'Be proud of what you've done, but don't look back'. Something like that, and I thought they were quite wise words and very applicable to myself, in the sense that I don't look back on what I've done. I don't feel I feed off past things, or, um, and I don't actually have that much interest in what I've done...or the past. Although I do have a vague sense of pride about it, at times. ..."

Nigel Godrich to produce McCartney album
Paul McCartney has been working on his new album with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, who also produced the new version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’.
On recording the Band Aid 20 single McCartney said: "I play bass on it, that’s really all I was really asked to do and that’s what I fancied doing. It’s kind of nice to do that. And then the national, wonderful press got into ‘Why aren’t you singing? Oh he’s too old!’ and did all that shit. I was like ‘Oh, fuck off!’ So I’ve just done what my producer asked me to do, he’s producing it."
Playing his Hofner ‘Beatle bass’, McCartney was joined at Air by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, who plays piano and Supergrass’ Danny Goffey, who plays drums. Also present in the studio were Jonny Greenwood and Fran Healy from Travis, although Darkness guitarists Justin and Dan Hawkins waited until Saturday (November 13) to record what Justin called some "very Eighties, twin harmony guitars." Chris Martin, who had originally been down to play keyboards, was miffed at his exclusion until he discovered it was Yorke who was taking his place. [from NME]

Band Aid 20 news round-up
Controversial comtemporary artist Damien Hirst's sleeve artwork for 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' has been rejected on the basis that it would frighten small children. Despite having reportedly been given a free reign as to how to adorn the single's sleeve, Hirst's work has been rejected on grounds of unsuitability. The potential artwork in fact seemed very appropriate. On one side it depicts the Grim Reaper cradling a starving African child in his arms, set against a blue sky with fluffy clouds, and on the other is a white child flaunting money.
Band Aid 20 sets a new world record: fastest-ever rush-release from studio to fans, as “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” to be available as an official download from Thursday 18th November. Marking the first, and fastest, rush-release of the digital download era, Band Aid 20’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was recorded on Sunday (14) afternoon, the label copy and artwork finalised on Monday, and the track digitally delivered to retail on Tuesday.
A radio station banned the new Do They Know It's Christmas song today after listeners said it was "rubbish". Bosses at Pembrokeshire Radio, in Narbeth, Wales, axed the revamped Band Aid number after 50 complaints within minutes of airing it.
Former Beatle Paul McCartney, who formed Band Aid 20 with Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Danny Goffey and Fran Healy, was so exhausted after recording bass for the charity single he dramatically collapsed on the floor. After two hours in the studio, he fell to the floor shouting, "Enough. No More. Finish." The shocking moment was captured on film and may be included at the end of the single's video, which will be introduced by Madonna on Thursday at 6.05pm on television.
You can still send in for At Ease Project 03 with your own design for 'Do they know it's Christmas?'

Bono on Radiohead
Tonight during Zane Lowe's slot on Radio 1, U2 played a live concert of some new tracks off their forthcoming album 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'. In an interview before the concert, Zane Lowe asked him what bands he thought could face up to U2 as greatest band. Bono said something like: "I think there's been a couple of bands in the last few years, like Oasis, Radiohead and Coldplay, that could have reached that level, but then they started to sway away from the mainstream. They have reached that level in their own rights, but they didn't try new things or go on a musical adventure." [thanks Fatal Robot]

Multiple versions of 'Do they know it's Christmas?'
The new version of Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid 20 will be available to download in different mixes, according to The Sun.
Bob Geldof has reportedly stated that there will be different versions to cater for all tastes, such as a 'rock' mix, in which artists such as The Darkness' Justin Hawkins would feature more heavily, whereas a poppier version would favour Will Young and Rachel Stevens.
The song was aired for the first time this morning on Chris Moyles' show on Radio One, will be available to download on 22nd November, and in hard copies from the 29th.
The Sun also reports that Sir Bob Geldof has secured the services of Def Jam Records to get the CD in US shops at the same time as the British release, November 29. Delighted Sir Bob said: “It’s fantastic that we’re releasing it in the US as it will hopefully raise loads of money. We’ve got names like McCartney, Chris Martin, Dido and Radiohead involved and they’re all big there.

Thom Yorke in Band Aid 20
It's been rumoured for quite some time now and until today it has been uncertain if Thom would join Band Aid 20. But the BBC reports that Thom Yorke has recorded his part for 'Do they know it's Christmas?" already. The song, to be released on November 29th, is being produced by long time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.
Midge Ure, the single's executive producer, says which parts they use from which artists is still up in the air, and Bono is flying in from Ireland this evening.
It will be titled Band Aid 20 to mark the 20th anniversary of the original song, which featured stars such as George Michael, Duran Duran and Phil Collins. Sold on CD for £3.99 and also available as a download, the new version is hot favourite to be Christmas number one in the UK this year. Retailers expect to sell about 500,000 copies in its first week. Retailers Woolworths and Virgin Megastores will give their proceeds to the Band Aid Trust charity, while Chancellor Gordon Brown has decided not to charge VAT.
The Band Aid Trust spent more than $144m (£77.5m) on famine relief in Africa between 1985 and the release of a Live Aid DVD earlier this month. [thanks Andrew & Paul]

Four Tet on Radiohead
Old time at-ease-boardie Scott interviewed Keiren Hebden aka Four Tet the other week and chatted a bit about Radiohead and the Skttrbrain Remix he did for them. Here’s the quote below which will be part of the story when it is printed in Onion magazine next Thursday (also available on-line at www.onion.com.au").
Keiren Hebden: “They give me the masters and I do whatever I like really,” offered Hebden of the remix process. “I send them back and hope they like it. Radiohead told me to pick anything I liked off the [Hail To The Thief] album. Sia hadn’t finished her album but gave me six tracks that I could work on.”
Four Tet was pleased at the reaction that the biggest remix client gave after hearing the Skttrbrain Remix.
“I supported Radiohead on two tours and I did the remix in between. When we started the second tour in Ireland I gave them Sktterbrain and they promised me they wouldn’t play it in front of me because it would all be a little bit too intense. I turned up to their dressing room the next day before the show and they had my remix on really loud! I was like ‘Oh God!’, but they said, ‘Don’t worry, we really love it!’.” [thanks Scott]

David Gilmour: "I love Radiohead"
Pink Floyd's David Gilmour was interviewed in The Guardian:
In keeping with their reputation for a very English kind of fustiness, Pink Floyd's alumni seem only distantly aware of any of their supposed connections to the generations that followed in their wake. "I've never been very interested in modern music," says Waters. "I'll always listen to a new Bob Dylan album. But it takes an awful lot of something for anyone else to break into what I listen to."
David Gilmour, the guitarist who stood with Waters at the group's core until their ugly fall-out in the mid 1980s, seems more tuned in, though maybe only just. "I love Radiohead," he told me last year. "I don't like all of their stuff - tragically, I like some of their earlier things better. I'm 56, with hordes of children running round the place, so life is busy. I don't get many chances to sit down and really absorb whole albums the way I should do, but they've done some very good things. I can see why some people make the comparison. But it's hard to hear what he [Thom Yorke] says. He kind of mumbles, doesn't he?" [thanks Hatori]

Stanley Donwood designs new At Ease shirts
Time for a new At Ease t-shirt! The magnificent Stanley Donwood was so kind to design an exclusive t-shirt for ateaseweb.com. You may have already seen the logo on the site in the past few weeks.
The red shirts will be printed with the logo [signed with 'Stanley'] on the front in black and white. The back will have a small 'Radiohead', 'At Ease' & three dots on it. It looks the price will be set on £10 / €15 / US$19 / AUS$ 25 / CAN$ 23 (based on current exchange rates).
The shirts will be printed by Sandbag Ltd, a sister company to w.a.s.t.e. As you all know w.a.s.t.e. have never failed when it comes to quality shirts and that's why I've chosen to place the order there this time. Also, a lot of people know their shirts, so you sorta know what you can expect. The shirts are custom made and sweatshop free.
For those in the USA: Pease note that this shirt runs about a size to a size and a half SMALLER than USA sizing. if you typically wear an XL size shirt, the XL will be too small. I'm trying to get XXL shirts as well. But, for now they are not available.
Anyway, I'd like to know... for those who want to order a shirt, which size you want to order, so I can get a rough idea what to get in stock. You can select your choice here.

Dj Shadow releases Radiohead remix
Apparently DJ Shadow is releasing his remix of Radiohead's 'The Gloaming'. The earlier reported remix is not for sale but only available as a freebie at the DJ Shadow store. Greg made a purchase at the store and wrote in:
"I made a purchase at DJ Shadow because they were promising a limited, special-edition record with every purchase. I got the vinyl bonus in the mail today, and it is an LP, shaped like Dick Cheney's head (and with added horns, fangs, and red eyes), and the music on it is a remix of "The Gloaming," featuring snippits of George Bush saying "terror" and "weapons" and similar phrases. It is probably the same thing Shadow played on the radio a while ago."

At Ease Project 02 | OK Photoshop
Time for At Ease Project 02. Another OK Photoshop assignment. Use this photo by Barry Brecheisen of Jonny Greenwood. Click on the image for a larger version.
The assignment: edit a photo in Photoshop (or any other image editing software). You can only use the given photo, but you can do whatever you want with it. Copy, paste, mix it with other pics, use every filter you can... as long as the result worth sending in. I can make a list of guidelines, but I guess you can all imagine what can be done and what not. So, keep it nice and civil, use your talent and sense of humour. Link it to current events or whatever you think is appropriate. Deadline: Friday November 5th
Please keep in mind that the result will be resized to fit (width: 375 pixels) on the site, so the best ones can be posted on ateaseweb.com. Send them over to adriaan@ateaseweb.com with 'At Ease Project 02' in the subject line. Good luck!
