Christopher O'Riley to play Sydney Festival 2006

Christopher O'Riley is coming to Sydney as part of the Sydney Festival 2006. He will be performing the music of Radiohead and Shostakoviich in a special concert at the City Recital Hall on January 22.

"Shostakovich was one of the first composers that had to deal with music as subtext, not necessarily the direct expression of something, but the ironic displacement of musical expression." says O'Riley. He presents Radiohead bereft of Thom Yorke's lyrics, and finds their music to be the perfect foil for the preludes and fugues of Shostakovich. "My idea was to have complexity and simplicity juxtaposed, because I thought it would help my concentration as a performer, and I think that it helps the audience in terms of relief from complexity." For Christopher O'Riley, the 24 preludes and fugues of Shostakovich represent the most important body of music to have come out of the piano in the 20th century.

Ateaseweb.com is back.... finally

Well, what can I say? 12 days without ateaseweb.com. Did you get some work done? It's hard to explain what really happened, but it's just probably my bad luck with servers. As you might have noticed the latest server runs better than every other one we've had. So, something else HAD to happen. Still clueless, not my fault, etc. But the only facts I have for you is that the whole server moved from Dallas, TX to sunny California (L.A.). Some news posts are missing. They will appear here again soon. Apologies for the downtime.

Corporate Love Breakdown: The Bluegrass Tribute

A new Radiohead tribute has been released. "Corporate Love Breakdown" is a Bluegrass Tribute to Radiohead. The album is released by CMH Records and features tracks from early Radiohead ('Stop Whispering') to the band's latest releases ('2+2=5' and 'Myxomatosis').

Jesse from Old School Freight Train, said that the Radiohead songs are difficult to begin with: "It's very difficult transcribing the kind of intense and complicated music that Radiohead produces. What you've got is a band constantly switching meters, bringing with it a lot of odd time signatures. Plus, it's tough deciding who would play the various melodies. Bluegrass versions of material like this are also quite difficult, since there are no drums in bluegrass, and the heavy drums are such an integral part of rock. So, it's like, how do you rock without drums."

Listen to some tracks: Fake Plastic Trees | No Surprises | The National Anthem

Judge dismisses Wyrd Sisters motion to block HP film

The Ontario Superior Court has dismissed a motion by the Winnipeg folk group, the Wyrd Sisters that would have blocked the release of the upcoming Harry Potter movie in Canada, JAM reports.

The Wyrd Sisters tried to stop the theatrical release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, slated for Nov. 18. They argued that a fictional rock band in the film would ruin their careers and were seeking $40 million in damages from Warner Bros.

Although there is no mention of a Wyrd Sisters band in the film, the J.K. Rowling novel on which it is based refers to a group of hairy witches dubbed The Weird Sisters.

The Wyrd Sisters argued Friday that they've owned the trademark to the name in Canada since 1990, and that the wizard franchise is ruining their reputation.

They said the public would confuse the folk act with the band created for the Potter film, which includes members of Radiohead and Pulp.
