Thom on Dead Air Space: Lego & Tax investigations
Thom Yorke has posted on Radiohead's Dead Air Space again. Thom confirms working with Mark Stent in the studio, trying to focus on recording again:
whatever
wish away the nightmare
wish away the nightmare
you got a light you can feel it on your back
you got a light you can feel it on your back
you just got paid
you just got paid
so here we are with spike stent in our studio which now looks like NASA.
and we are being taken to task.
we ar e having to shake the dust off. no more bullshit.
stop answering the phones and thinking of excuses to leave the building.
instead get on with it.
jonny said today that since we were last radiohead, between us, we've had six children or rather our partners have, this may perhaps have something to do with our lack of focus.
but as this rock n roll we aint supposed to discuss this.. deny it every happened etc. what bullshit.
ofcourse there ar ethe other distractions,
sitting in the garden with your 12bore shotgun,
large orchestras doing drum machine noises,
getting suits made,
puppies,
canal boats,
beer,
modular synthesis,
lego,
tax investigations,
global warming and the end of life as we know it,
traffic,
deafness,
insanity,
normality.
whatever.

Arj Barker will fight anyone who doesn't like Radiohead
Our journalist from down under, Scott McLennan, handed some uncut interviews over, soon to be published in one of Australia's magazines. One of them is an interview with comedian Arj Barker. When asked if he's a Radiohead fan he said:
"Oh yeah, they're my fucking favourite," Arj enthused. "I've seen them five times in concert and I've never got to meet them or hang out, but that doesn't matter. Just because you like their music doesn't mean you have to be buddies with them, but it would be cool I guess. I don't think I've ever really met many famous rock stars, but I'm friends with Primus and they're nice guys. If I ever ran into Thom Yorke though I'd probably be a little star-struck, because I just think that band fucking rules and I'll fight anyone who doesn't think so."
Another interview was with pianist Christopher O'Riley. The whole thing is available below.

Q101 protest against nixed Chicago shows
Nix a Radiohead concert and face the wrath of Chicago rock fans--or at least their backsides.
Q101 (101.1-FM) DJ Fook has issued a call to arms to protest the city's decision to keep Radiohead from playing Millennium Park in June. In what Fook called "a very lame scheduling conflict," the city reportedly denied Radiohead the stage because the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra is set to rehearse there on one of the proposed dates.
Accordingly, Fook listeners are planning to moon the Bean at around 6:30 Friday evening, and Q101 is arranging for a live band to cover Radiohead songs at the event. Now that's justice. [from Chicago Tribune, thanks Patrick]

Holy Cow... it's just...
DJ Mark Ronson has recorded a complete new version of Radiohead's 'Just'. The track features vocals from Phantom Planet's Alex Greenwald. Listen to a track here. And Pitchfork heard it too:
Deep down, everyone wanted to hear Radiohead at their high school prom. Of course, it never happened and we got the the Bucketheads' "The Bomb" instead (which was OK, too). So I'm thinking Ronson dreamed this up during a Collegiate High School slow dance, the thought buried itself in his subconscious until he finally could commit the time and talent to make it work.
The resulting cut is the thigh-slapping Cake track that never was. My seventh-grade anthem gets a bubbling break beat, a couple soul stomps and nasty lil' horn solo to boot. For Alex Greenwald, this is the best thing poppin' since Donnie Darko. So high-fives all-around for Team Ronson.
When will the final mix be done? Maybe Mark will bump it again on his East Village Radio show. Right now, shaking him down on First Ave. seems like the only other option. Asking nicely might work, too.
[thanks Mandy]

Chicago city drowns out Radiohead bid
Chicago has rejected a bid by Radiohead to perform at Millennium Park in June, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Radiohead hoped to perform in the new venue at the northern end of Grant Park on June 19 and 20, the tour dates it has earmarked for Chicago performances, according to sources close to the group.
But the Cultural Affairs Department, which is responsible for programming at Millennium Park, rejected the band's bid to perform there -- even though the group would have paid rental fees of $100,000 -- because the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to hold a rehearsal June 20.
Radiohead and many of its fans still consider the concert the band played at Hutchinson Field in summer 2001 as one of its most memorable. Although that show was a well-organized, artistic and financial success, city officials were reluctant for the next few years to allow cutting-edge rock acts to return to Grant Park because of noise complaints from a handful of nearby residents.
Criticism also greeted a paid concert by singer Tori Amos at Millennium Park that same month, although citizens' groups praised other efforts to host revenue- generating events.
The Amos concert was organized by local concert promoters Jam Productions, who also ran the Radiohead concert in 2001 and hoped to bring the group to Millennium Park this summer. Jam executives declined to comment. [thanks Summer & Michael]

OK Computer to get complete reggae treatment
The Easy Star All-Stars, the musical collective behind 2003's underground hit, 'Dub Side of the Moon', are going to do a complete reggae version of Radiohead's 'OK Computer'. The disc, entitled Radiodread will be released worldwide in September 2006 on Easy Star Records.
"It was always the number one question we'd get asked in interviews, on tour, at parties, wherever" says Easy Star CEO Eric Smith, "but while everyone had suggestions on what album we should do, from 'The Wall' to 'London Calling' to 'Thriller', it was not at all easy to find a release that had the right combination of music, concept, fan loyalty, and translatability to make it a worthy follow up."
Michael G says: "Conceptually and thematically we knew the album was a solid candidate; but we just weren't sure whether the arrangements could work. On one hand, 'OK Computer' has elements that are perfect - strong melodies, intense dynamics and trippy soundscapes; on the other, it has complex time signatures, chord changes and things that typically aren't found in reggae. The more we looked at it, the more we realized that this was an album we had to do."
Michael G spent several months working on arrangements, at the end of which all three Easy Star founders felt they had not only a great sequel on their hands, but a record that could be even stronger and more nuanced than 'Dub Side of the Moon'. Basic tracks were recorded in September and October, followed by overdubs and vocals with guest artists. Already completed are performances by Horace Andy, Morgan Heritage, Frankie Paul, and Kirsty Rock, with more big names to hit the studio in the coming month.
"We're just as excited as everyone else to see what this ends up sounding like after we finish mixing it," says Oppenheimer. "So far, we have been amazed at how well it's been working. After listening to what Michael G and the band has done with the songs, it almost sounds like they were meant to be written for reggae."
