Stanley Donwood Audiobooks available now

We had to wait a while, but Stanley Donwood has made his Audiobook avaialable at his shop. Two stories by Stanley Donwood ('My Giro' & 'Wage Packet') are read by Ric Jerrom on CD in a letterpress-printed card wallet. Running time is approximately 45 minutes. One piece of advise though: 'Do not listen to the second story whilst eating'.

You may be mildly diverted to know that my promises, though often forgotten and neglected for some time are usually adhered to. More prints have been added to the Manufactory's stock, and, at last, so has a spoken-word CD, which you will find in the 'Books &c.' department. And the 'weird thing' I mentioned here several long months ago is almost in manufacture. I can further promise that an entire range of visual impedimenta will be available here with the launch of 'LONDON VIEWS', towards the end of May 2006, when there will be an exhibition in a gallery that used to be a shop supplying sado-masochistic paraphenalia in Soho in London in England in Europe

[thanks Tanner]

Rent Radiohead's OK Computer studio

In the February/March 2006 issue of MoneySense magazine (Page 65-66), an article entitled "Manors, Please" detailed how you can now rent out Jane Seymour's 700-year-old manor house, the same place Radiohead recorded OK Computer. Just e-mail the British actress Jane Seymour at www.stcath.com. Rather than let the 700-year-old, 11-bedroom manor house near Bath, England, sit empty for several weeks a year, the former Bond girl and star of Wedding Crashers chooses to rent it out to strangers. The home comes complete with private chapel and croquet lawn, as well as a star-studded history. Radiohead recorded their groundbreaking album OK Computer here. Johnny Cash, Goldie Hawn, even Henry VIII and his mistress all stayed here. And now you can too. [thanks Lina]

Radiodread nearing completion

As reported earlier Radiohead's OK Computer will have a reggae revision. Currently work continues on one of the most anticipated releases of the year: Radiodread.

In February, producer Michael G. flew down to Florida to Inner Circle's recording studio to record reggae legend—strike that—music legend Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals. Toots lent his distinctive vocal style to a revved up version of "Let Down," which has promptly gone into constant rotation on his tour bus's sound system.

This was preceded by a session at the legendary Electric Lady Studios on 8th Street in Manhattan, where Citizen Cope captured his take on "Karma Police." Taking a break from recording his upcoming album, Cope welcomed Michael G and Easy Star founder Eric Smith to record the track. Being a huge Radiohead fan, he is excited to be involved with the project.

Earlier in the month, longtime Easy Star cohort Sugar Minott voiced "Exit Music (For A Film)." The pairing of Sugar Minott's powerful, melancholic voice with the haunting "Exit Music" works beautifully; Minott has also signed on to record a new album for Easy Star in 2007.

Easy Star All-Stars vocalists Junior Jazz and Tamar-Kali have cut "Subterranean Homesick Alien" and "Climbing Up The Walls," respectively. This was just before the touring unit headed to France, Italy and Croatia for their first-ever European tour. Other artists who have already cut vocals for the album include Horace Andy, Morgan Heritage, Frankie Paul and Kirsty Rock.

This leaves only a few more tracks to be finished before final mixing commences in Brazil with Michael G and Victor Rice at the helm. The record is due to hit stores mid-August with an extensive Easy Star All-Stars tour to follow. Says Michael G: "We're at the stage where we can all sense what an incredible album this will be. We can't wait to get started with the mix of Radiodread as that is where the true soul of the album will emerge."

Thom Yorke turns Tony Blair down

Thom Yorke says he turned down the chance to discuss climate change with Tony Blair because the British prime minister has "no environmental credentials."

The charity Friends of the Earth, for which the singer is an ambassador, asked him to meet Blair.

But Yorke said Blair had no record of championing the environment and added that dealing with the governing Labour Party's "spin doctors" made him feel ill.

"I got so stressed out and so freaked out about it. Initially when it came up I tried to be pragmatic," Yorke told New Music Express magazine in an issue out Tuesday. "But Blair has no environmental credentials as far as I'm concerned."

"It was like talking to Blair's spin doctors. It was all getting weird. It was just obvious there was no point in meeting him anyway, and I didn't want to," he said.

Yorke says the experience has soured him on political activism.

"I came out of that whole period just thinking, I don't want to get involved directly, it's poison. I'll just shout my mouth off from the sidelines."

Yorke is backing Friends of the Earth's Big Ask campaign, which is calling for international cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. [CNN]

Today the pre-sale started for W.a.s.t.e.-members. W.a.s.t.e.'s ticket shop has had a lot of trouble today. Please note that there are still tickets available for all UK shows through gigsandtours.com. Those tickets will go on sale 25th March (9am local time).

Single track downloads instead of full album?

NME reports on a statement from the band, commenting on the upcoming tour and possible track downloads instead of a full album:

"We're excited to be touring again, especially to play new songs to an audience. For the first time, we have no contract or release deadline to fulfil - it's both liberating and terrifying.

"To keep things more fun and spontaneous, we will be playing new songs that are work in progress. We will also be releasing music to download when we are excited about it, rather than wait twelve months for a full blown album release. Music's not just about all-time greats - it's also a document of its time, and we want to be able to put out a song when it feels right."

Thom updates from the studio in la la land

Thom's latest entry on Dead Air Space:

might i suggest that those selling their koko tickets on e bay for stupid money gives a contribution...
say 30 percent of their proceeds,
back to friends of the earth, for whose benefit we are all doing this show.
seems only fair, unless you're a shallow____, dont you think?

by the way listening back to things we are doing and looking through the lyrics today
and stuff it feels like we are finally getting somewhere. there are lots of songs. too many
to get together straight away. so we will be furiously rehearsing and writing as we go.

... i think we ve always worked best when we arent bothered
about making mistakes.
theres a lot of baggage about the old way of doing things that is hard to get over...
all the 'album' crap..just this level of pressure that is ridiculous..
we're just going to do what feels right at the time
quite intothe idea of singles at the moment(that dont get on the radio)
..
no grand design... wherever we are at. some of the random stuff we have at the moment
could be the most exciting... trying to figure out how on earth we will be able to play some of it.
anyway it is not important. there is more to life than freaking out about petty bullshit like this. there are
more important things to think about.

Thom

No Scanner Darkly Score, but new Thom solo work

A day after telling EW that Radiohead would be scoring A Scanner Darkly, director Richard Linklater's film adaptation of the Philip K. Dick sci-fi novel, Warner Independent Pictures is singing a slightly different tune. Instead of a full-blown original score, the film will feature music by Radiohead, including a brand-new track from lead singer Thom Yorke's upcoming solo release. Warner Independent is still working out what music will make the cut, and couldn't say if the tracks would be all new or a mix of old and new. [thanks Jeremy]

Warner confirms: Radiohead scores 'A Scanner Darkly'

In earlier reports, Radiohead were rumoured to do the score for the film 'A Scanner Darkly'. Later on these rumours were denied again. But now film distributor Warner Independent Pictures confirms that Radiohead is doing the score for Richard Linklater's upcoming film version of the Philip K. Dick novel. Keanu Reeves stars in the futuristic story of government espionage, which will be rendered in the rotoscope-animated style of Linklater's Waking Life. Originally slated for a fall 2005 release, the film is now due out in limited release July 7. [source: Entertainment Weekly]

Ticket holders cash in on The Big Ask Live show

Tickets for Friends Of The Earth's The Big Ask Live concert featuring Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood have started trading for inflated sums of money online reports.

The show which is being held at London's KOKO venue on May 1 as part of the charity's The Big Ask campaign completely sold out after going on sale at 12pm on March 11.

However within minutes, the £55 tickets began appearing on internet auction sites, with sellers demanding in excess of £300 for tickets.

This level of opportunism has left Friends Of The Earth disappointed.

"We have done everything within our power to ensure that fans had access to the tickets at the price fixed by Friends Of The Earth - for example by limiting purchases to two tickets per person," a spokesperson for the charity told NME.COM.

Adding: "It is extremely disappointing to find that some people are selling on tickets for personal gain - particularly as this is a charity event which has been organised to raise money and support for Friends Of The Earths' climate campaign, The Big Ask."

Tickets for V: all gone...

There was feverish buying of tickets for Britain's V Festival Friday, with tickets being offered on eBay for up to £615 ($1,075) a pair -- nearly three times their face value -- within hours of them going on sale. All tickets were sold out after just three hours, the organizers said. Radiohead headlines to the festival in August on two dates.

CNN reported that more than 65,000 music fans are set to flock to Weston Park in Staffordshire, central England, and Hylands Park in Chelmsford, eastern England, on August 19 and 20.

Tickets went on sale Friday at 9 a.m. with a top price of £120 ($210) for a weekend pass including camping. Single day passes cost £58.50 ($102).

In London's West End, by the time the tickets went on sale at an outlet in Argyll Street a queue stretched hundred of yards round the block into nearby Oxford Street.

Two hours later there were 539 sets of tickets on offer on eBay, with a top asking price of £550 ($965) for two. Later in the day the figure rose to 1,434 sets with a top price of £615 ($1,075) a pair.

In fact the actual tickets are not being sent out until 10 days before the event -- those buying them Friday receiving vouchers.

V Festival director Bob Angus said the frenzied response was no surprise.

"As delighted as we are that the festival has sold out, we are not shocked that it has happened so quickly -- it really is testament to the line-up we've managed to secure this year," he told the UK's Press Association.

"We already have some outstanding acts signed up and we're continuing to search for the finest artists around to give music fans yet another great V weekend." [thanks Brady]
