Dominoes with Jonny

Jonny dropped by at the offical Radiohead message board confessing he has lost at dominoes. It seemed it really bothered the poor man. The only Radiohead related comment Jonny made was: "Rumours of my banjo playing are greatly exagerated."

Here's more on the domino fiasco:

"I've jost lost very badly at dominoes (with my cruel wife) and part of the act of losing entailed confessing as much on the message board. Which I've now done. Oh, the shame! I REALLY lost.

I play with her uncles sometimes. It's like goodfellas. Lot's of slamming dominoes, and games that stop after 3 rounds, because they've worked out what everyone else has (and I'm baffled as hell.)

You've got to love games.

Threre's a word, 'redatt', I think from somewhere in southeast asia, meaning 'unlikely to participate in after dinner games'. Describes so many people. Not me!

It's a noble pasttime. All of them. Except trivial pursuit.

Of course I had all the doubles (disadvantage) and she had all the 5's. And she cheats. Probably.

Forgive me father, I have lost. Badly. 11 points."

Stanley Donwood to exhibit new work

Radiohead artist Stanley Donwood is to debut his first solo exhibition next month, NME reports. Launching at Lazarides Galley on May 19 in London's Greek Street, the show will run for one month and feature his 'London Views' collection.

Donwood gained recognition for his work on the album and poster art for Radiohead. He has collaborated with the band since 1994, when he designed the artwork for their second album 'The Bends'.

In 2001, his album cover for the special edition of 'Amnesiac' secured Radiohead a Grammy for 'Best Recording Package'.

'London Views' features 13 original prints, carved by the artist into linoleum by one small cutting tool.

Each panel depicts an apocalyptic vision of modern day London, viewed in panorama from the Thames and showing iconic structures including Big Ben, Canary Wharf and the dome of St Paul's.

Pitchfork trashes 'Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads'

Pitchfork posted a review of the new Radiohead cover album 'Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads'. Here's the most positive part of the review:

"This album title is going places: These are people who are "heads" because they make beats, but they also purportedly like a group named Radiohead, you see? So, I mean, someone probably should do something with that. Maybe they should go on iTunes and get the Radiohead Essentials (nothing off that crappy first album, though!) and give whatever songs to some artists who are in the studio right now." [thanks Doug]

Noel Gallagher: Radiohead more important than Oasis

This quote from Britain's Maxim magazine was a bit of a surprise. Turns out Noel Gallagher thinks Radiohead are now more important than Oasis.

The Oasis guitarist has conceded the albums released by Radiohead have surpassed anything his group have released. Noel also believes Coldplay could yet match the achievements of him and brother Liam.

Noel Gallagher said: "I think I could have said, without any argument, till the year 2000 Oasis were the most important British band since The Beatles. But I think Radiohead have been important and I think Coldplay may yet turn out to be important but not so much now."

The acclaimed songwriter, and self-confessed Beatles obsessive, insists the best band since the Fab Four are legendary punk group the Sex Pistols.

He added to Britain’s Maxim magazine: "The most important band since The Beatles, really, was the Sex Pistols. Oasis are the most important band since the Pistols!" [via Oa515]

Radiodread update: Mixing begins

Still keepin you updated on the Radiodread album, The Easy Star All-Star's reggae re-vision of Radiohead's OK Computer.

In February, producer Michael G. flew down to Florida to Inner Circle's recording studio to record reggae legend—strike that—music legend Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals. Toots lent his distinctive vocal style to a revved up version of "Let Down," which
has promptly gone into constant rotation on his tour bus's sound system.

This was preceded by a session at the legendary Electric Lady Studios on 8th Street in Manhattan, where Citizen Cope captured his take on "Karma Police." Taking a break from recording his upcoming album, Cope welcomed Michael G and Easy Star founder Eric Smith to record the track. Being a huge Radiohead fan, he is excited to be involved with the project.

Earlier in the month, longtime Easy Star cohort Sugar Minott voiced "Exit Music (For a Film)." The pairing of Sugar Minott's powerful, melancholic voice with the haunting "Exit Music" works beautifully;

Easy Star All-Stars vocalists Junior Jazz and Tamar-Kali have cut "Subterranean Homesick Alien" and "Climbing Up The Walls," respectively. This was just before the touring unit headed to France, Italy and Croatia for their first-ever European tour. Other artists who have already cut vocals for the album include Horace Andy, Morgan Heritage, Frankie Paul and Kirsty Rock.

Final mixing is now in session with Michael G and Victor Rice at the helm. The record is due to hit stores mid-August with an extensive Easy Star All-Stars tour to follow. Says Michael G: "We're at the stage where we can all sense what an incredible album this will be."

Radiohead are warning fans not to be duped into buying tickets to a gig that isn't happening.

The band have confirmed a UK tour for May, and will also play bigger festival shows in August. One thing the band won't be doing however, is a show in London at Somerset House.

A spokesperson for the band told NME.COM: "Radiohead's management have asked fans not to send money for a gig being advertised at Somerset House in London on July 8. The band are not playing this show."

Colin and Thom's NME interview

The NME interview with Thom Yorke & Colin Greenwood is now available. Here are some bits and pieces from the interview. Thom & Colin explain the silence after the Coachella festival (May 2004).

Thom: "I personally wanted to get out of the whole thing for a while, but you discover fairly quickly that you get the horrors. Because you're sitting there going "OK, errr, well I could go and get a normal job or I could go back and do that." It's not a difficult choice. You realise very quickly that you're in a very privileged position. Sitting there on your hands is a foolish thing to do."

Did everyone feel that way?

Colin: "If you're doing anything that's important or confronting, you're going to get the fear. Ed was the same, he felt that Radiohead was just baggage that he didn't need."

Is it always like this when you've had a break?

Thom: "Sometimes I just get shit-scared, which is stupid really, because the whole point of starting up again like this is to get away from that. Normally by this point in recording we should have stopped. But we chose not to stop because the point about us is the hanging out together and sharing ideas."

"Personally, one of the things I find hardest is being part of the whole Radiohead thing" admits Thom, "and I'm not really interested in that anymore. I'm trying to work out what exactly it is that keeps me wanting to do it. None of us really want to be part of that band, like that anymore, just because it's a particular monster. And you don't want to be in this situation where you're just feeding the monster. It should be the other way around, whatever that means!"

They do plan to sign a record deal eventually, but on their own terms, and not until the album is finished and they've got something to show for their efforts.

Thom: "I think it's a nutty situation to be in to have no definite release system. It's really liberating not to feel part of the record company structure. It should be an extremely positive place to be in but it's also an extremely strange situation to be in. One of the things you discover really quickly when you discover you're not committed to anything is that you need some level of commitment because otherwise you just start fucking about, which is what we did for ages."

Thom Yorke blasts music 'retards'

Thom Yorke has launched a scathing attack on record companies and radio stations as he believes they are only just now looking at the internet for new talent.

Speaking about Arctic Monkeys' rise to fame, Yorke said: "A good thing for new music would be more of the mainstream loosening up a bit and letting stuff through. Radio 1 won't play anything fucking decent. You need to sort the radio out."

He added: "The fact that poor Arctic Monkeys are getting so much attention is purely based on the fact that the mainstream music business is such a bunch of fucking retards as far as I'm concerned."

His latest comments come in an interview with NME as Radiohead record their seventh album.

Yorke says the music will not be a political 'war cry' but a 'terrifying' vision of urban and suburban life. He added: 'It's about that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic thinking, "I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else."'

Radiohead reveal 'terrifying' new album

Thom Yorke has compared writing for Radiohead's new album to that on 'OK Computer' - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying!

The group are recording with new producer Mark 'Spike' Stent (who has worked with Keane, Madonna and Oasis in the past) and in a world exclusive interview, Yorke said that despite rumours that the follow-up to 'Hail To The Thief' will have a political feel, in fact the opposite is true.

He said: "It's about that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic, thinking, 'I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else'.
Interestingly enough it's similar to 'OK Computer' in a way. It's much more terrifying. But 'OK Computer' was terrifying too -some of the lyrics were."

Up to 16 tracks are being considered for the band's next album, with current favourites including 'Nude', '15 Step', 'Arpeggi' and 'House Of Cards'. [from NME]
