Yep, the ateaseweb.com was down for a bit too long. In an attempt to change servers, something went wrong. But it looks like we're all set to go now. Some news posts are missing. They will be added again soon. But we're in time for the last gig of the North American tour. But more on that later on. Apologies for the downtime.
Paul Parks, posted on coasttocoastam.com with a remarkable story. Paul is the house photographer for Viejas Entertainment, who organised the Radiohead show in San Diego (July 27th). Just when at dusk the rocket launch from Vandenberg (Air Force Base) occurred. All eyes went off the stage and to the sky.
"While I was watching the rocket I saw a shiny object moving above and apparently way beyond the roof top of the stage. It was not a camera glitch or dirt on the sensor (just had the sensor cleaned a week ago) and you can see that the object was moving and not on the same spot on the photo as the previous shot.
It was not a bird either....it's hard to tell distances but it seemed to be further and higher then a bird would have been visible. And as I watched it move....it moved not like a bird. Kind of sauntering or floating. Then in an instant....poof....it disappeared! I even have shots of the same scene seconds later and....rocket trail still there but no UFO.
On the close ups it's clear to see that a flying saucer was watching the launch ;-) And I will say this....that rocket had a top secret payload and spy satellite on it and was the largest rocket ever launched on the West Coast ;-) They're watching us :-)) Below are 6 photos, including the close ups. Oh I've sent along a few shots from the Radiohead concert as well. After watching these guys I can understand why a UFO might be hanging around !! Radiohead is like from another planet !!!" [thanks Declan]

Thom Yorke's label XL Recordings had their headquarters redone with a new mural, inspired by Thom Yorke's forthcoming release The Eraser. Andrew took some pictures:
Australian radio station Triple J are going to play The Eraser in full this Sunday the 2nd July at 6pm.
And as reported earlier, Dave Fanning played 3 and a bit of tracks from the album on 2FM Ireland. Listeners were texting in their opinions throughout the show and the response was mainly negative. Dave Fanning wondered if we'd "all think it's great by September!". However a female caller towards the end of the show said she had downloaded the album and thought it was great and easy to listen to but people were not to expect it to sound like Radiohead, she also said she would be buying it when it's released. He finished the show playing about a minute of "Cymbal Rush" to which he read out a text from a listener claiming they would rather "give birth to a dinosaur than listen to that!". [thanks Zoe & Dermot]
First Eraser reviews are coming in. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars:
No doubt these would have made excellent Radiohead songs. The Eraser is full of moments when you wait for the band to kick in, and it doesn't happen. It reminds you how much Radiohead thrive on their sense of collective creation -- even at their most downbeat, their camaraderie gives off a life-affirming energy. Yet these aren't Radiohead songs, or demos for Radiohead songs. They're something different, something we haven't heard before. Lieutenant Yorke is asking new questions, looking for clues to the same old mystery: how to appear, incompletely.
Thom Yorke was interviewed for LA Times. LAST year, Thom Yorke was supposed to unwind. Radiohead, the band whose decade-long ascent has turned the singer into pop's definitive reluctant visionary, was on hiatus after a protracted cycle of recording and touring. Yorke was savoring the retreat from what he wryly calls "making RECORDS, in big capital letters," and the chance to reacquaint himself with his Oxford home, his longtime partner Rachel Owen and two young children. But instead of clearing a space for calm, Yorke found himself up to his neck in new thoughts.
"At my house, there's a room about this size," Yorke said, gesturing at the spacious suite in San Francisco's Clift Hotel where he sat discussing "The Eraser," the album he's releasing on July 10. "The entire room was just covered — the whole floor, with notes and scraps of paper. A friend of mine came by just before we started recording, and he was just looking through it, laughing his head off, saying, how are you going to piece this together?" together?"
Just before tonight's show, more pictures from San Diego were added to Dead Air Space.
Radiohead played their second sold out show at Bayside in San Diego tonight. Their final stop on the North American leg will be Los Angeles, California. Earlier this afternoon they sound checked several songs: 'Wicked Child'(Jonny on banjo), 'A Wolf At The Door', 'I Might Be Wrong', 'Pyramid Song', 'Videotape', 'Myxomatosis', 'Exit Music', a new song on Rhodes keyboard (slow tempo), and 'Airbag'. The band kicked off at 20:12 (PDT) with 'Airbag'. Usual closer, 'Everything In Its Right Place' ended the 24 song set. Thanks to trask for the live updates from the venue.

As announced earlier, Thom Yorke's The Eraser will get several previews on radio stations worldwide. For those in Ireland: Dave Fanning will be previewing The Eraser on Monday evening on his RTE 2fm radio show. [thanks Michael]
Remember when David Cameron said that Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood played Fake Plastic Trees especially for him at the Koko show? Anyway, here’s a spoof version of Radiohead's Creep with a David Cameron impressionist singing reworked lyrics – it basically takes the piss out of David Cameron and his love for all things of current trend (of which Radiohead is definitely one). [thanks Tarek]

This Saturday a nearly 40 minute interview will air on Chicago Public Radio at 7pm CST and MPR's The Current at 9am CST, which will feature Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood.
Thom and Jonny talk about the president's daughter visiting the New York show, Madonna's live show (Jonny: "She's got lots of dancers, we only have Colin"), online distribution of music, The Eraser, the band breaking up, the transformations of album songs to live songs (Thom: The songs played are not entirely a representative of what will happen" (...) "There are still a couple we need to try out"). Thom performs "I Want None Of This" live. The show's podcast will be available on Monday, and a full interview podcast will be released on Tuesday.
Check SoundOpinions.org for the podcast and pictures (refresh to see all pictures).
Thom Yorke did an interview for Chicago radio station 93.1 XRT, broadcast on June 20th. Thom talks about his forthcoming release The Eraser.
Some topics discussed are the samples used on the album, recording the album with Nigel Godrich, Radiohead and if Thom ever considered touring solo, the current Radiohead tour (including Bonnaroo). The interview is available at FineFineMusic.com [thanks Andrew]
And yes, we have another new Radiohead song. As reported in our live updates from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Radiohead played a new song entitled 'All I Need'. A video of the new song is already available [thanks Doug]:
Radiohead played their final sold out show tonight at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago Illinois. The band kicked off at 20:16 hrs (CDT) with 'Airbag'. New song, 'All I Need' premieres: Thom on the piano, Jonny on bells. The band closed their 23 song set with 'Down Is The New Up' and 'The Tourist'. Next they're off to California for the final six shows of the North American tour. Radiohead, currently on a nineteen-date tour of the U.S. and Canada, has played over 800 shows without repeating a set. “One of the worst things in music is when bands play the same set every night,” says Ed O’Brien.
Ed told New York Magazine: “We did about three and a half weeks on the road with Alanis Morissette just before we went to the studio for OK Computer—she played the same set every single night, and they’d been touring for like fifteen months. Her musicians literally went mad.”
Along with front man Thom Yorke and drummer Phil Selway, O’Brien puts together set lists after lunch on the day of each show. “For this tour, we have about fifteen new songs, and before the tour, we went through a list of about 100 old ones, then whittled it down and rehearsed 45 songs, and we draw from those.” We asked O’Brien to go through the list after last Tuesday’s show at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Just before tonight's show Jonny posted some new pictures on Dead Air Space from Bonnaroo.

Is there a future for Radiohead - or for the planet? When your fans are counted in the millions, and include leading politicians of every hue, the pressures can tell. In his most personal interview ever, Thom Yorke talks to Craig McLean about how the band nearly split, their carbon imprint, the death of David Kelly - and his first solo album: Observer.
And here's a video interview with Thom on The Eraser: All Messed Up
Radiohead played at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tennessee tonight. The band kicked off at 20:30 (CDT) and opened with 'There There'. Radiohead played 28 songs tonight, which is the longest set of the current tour.
Earlier tonight Beck played a short bit (half a minute) of Creep at Bonnaroo '06. According to our tour reporters, Thom was in a great mood. Midway through the show, after concert goers got tired of throwing glow sticks at each other, they started throwing them on stage. Thom without hesitation threw them back into the audience and playfully dodged the ones that came back. Jonny managed to retrieve two glowsticks which he placed in his guitar. The band closed their 2 1/2 hour set with 'Everything In Its Right Place'. Thanks to Arianna, Chrissy and Philip for updates and reports from the festival. The full setlist, reviews and photos can be found in the gigography.

i was told yesterday that one of the daughters of the president came to NY show 2.
we were playing THe Tourist at the end of the show.. and yyes we did wander what the shuffling manhandling fighting was in the distance of the audience.
turns out it was her 6 bodyguards clearing the way for the first daughters exit. and some pour soul objected at being manhandled by the secret service. i think i would have to.
infact if i had known all this my objections would have been more forthright and extensive...if you know what i mean. which is perhaps why our lot chose not to tell me who was in the building before we went on. probably a good idea.
hmm
i dont know if we should be
A. honoured
B. amused
C. bemused
D. ask if she had a valid ticket
E. object belatedly on moral grounds
F. ask again if she had a ticket and question whether this really what our gigs are about
G. dont blame the daughter for the father
H. shutup and smile
Some quotes from Phil yesterday, today Billboard posted their chat with Stanley Donwood. Stanley talks about the Eraser artwork, the new Radiohead songs and about when Thom & Stanley received a Grammy award for the artwork of Amnesiac.
"As often happens, the concurrent work that we were doing -- Thom with the music, and me with the artwork -- seemed to intertwine," Donwood tells Billboard.com. "We realized that the 'London' stuff would fit perfectly with 'The Eraser,' which in a lot of ways seems a very English record. There was something about this immense torrent washing everything away and the futile figure holding back the wave (or failing to) that worked with the record, especially as we had both seen the flood, just when Thom was starting on the music that would eventually become 'The Eraser.'"
"The Eraser" is packaged as one large foldout card of art, in which the CD will be slipped. "The packaging was a bit of a f***er, because the picture at actual size is about 12 feet long," Donwood admits. "We both wanted to avoid using plastic, apart from the CD itself of course."
Donwood (whose real name is Dan Rickwood -- "I like to separate the person I am at home -- washing up, vacuuming, picking up the kids from school and so on -- from whoever Stanley Donwood is," he says) has been friends with Yorke since their days at the University of Exeter. The pair won the best album packaging Grammy for Radiohead's 2001 album, "Amnesiac."
Radiohead played their final sold out gig at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City tonight. Next stop on the tour, will be the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. The band kicked off at 21:04 hrs (EDT) with 'The Gloaming'. Numerous celebrities including R.E.M. musicians, Michael Stipe and Michael Mills were spotted in the audience. Radiohead finished off their 24 song set with 'The Tourist'. Thanks once again to Chrissy for the live updates from the venue.

Years ago, when an English rock band was touring in North America during the World Cup, odds were not high that its members could find a bar showing even a few, if any, of the games. But luckily for Radiohead, this year's World Cup is widely available for viewing during the band's current jaunt, and everybody is having a little extra fun with the competition.
The group and members of its crew drew one team each in a betting pool, with first prize for the Cup winner clocking in at around $360, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway told Jaded Insider last night after the group's show at New York's Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Selway drew Ecuador, which beat Poland 2-0 last Friday. Guitarist Ed O'Brien has Serbia-Montenegro, which already lost 1-0 to the Netherlands and is mired in what he described as the "group of death." As luck would have it, his main challenger in said group is Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who drew powerhouse Argentina.
As for England team star David Beckham's shot on goal that was inadvertently headed by a Paraguay player into his own net (for the lone goal of the game), Selway chuckled, "It was going in anyway..." [thanks Ryan]
After the first New York show at the Madison Square Garden Theatre, Phil Selway told Billboard.com the band is aware fans are flying in for the shows from all over the country, due to the brevity of the tour and its concentration in major markets. "Plus, we're playing so many new songs," he said. "We're very lucky that our fans will allow us to do this."
Selway added that there's no timetable to release the follow-up to 2003's "Hail to the Thief," which will be Radiohead's first album since parting ways with longtime label EMI. As previously reported, Yorke's solo debut, "The Eraser," arrives July 11 via XL Recordings. "It's all Thom," Selway says of "The Eraser," of which he admits to being a huge fan. [thanks Lawrence]
Thom Yorke was interviewed by the Globe and Mail. In the interview he talks about his forthcoming album The Eraser:
"It was like we'd been let loose in the tool cupboard," Yorke said of is sessions with Godrich. It took just seven weeks to put The Eraser together - a stroll in the park compared with some of Radiohead's gruelling studio marathons.
"One of the reasons we wanted to do the project was to approach and engage with computers and not a lot else, and yet still have lots of life and energy in the music," he said. He found it ridiculously easy to generate material - "so easy, you think it must be cheating."
For those who are not attending the Bonnaroo Festival this year. Check the AT&T blue room and enjoy hours of free, uninterrupted, live streaming coverage from Bonnaroo Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 16th-18th starting at 1:30 PM edt/10:30 AM pdt. Radiohead will be playing Saturday June 17th, but for now it looks like Radiohead will NOT be part of the webcast.

They finished the 23 song set with 'Everything In Its Right Place' where Thom walked out to the edge of the stage to watch the band finish. Colin thanked the crowd in french. Full setlist is available in the Gigography.
Thom will be a guest on the the Henry Rollins show. The talkshow, broadcast on the IFC network will be the first live performance of Thom Yorke, promoting The Eraser. The show with Thom will be first broadcast on July 15th (22:00 hrs). [thanks Josh]
We've reported earlier that Radiohead's music is to be included in the new film 'A Scanner Darkly' along with Thom Yorke's 'Black Swan'. It turns out the Radiohead track 'Fog' is featured prominently in director Richard Linklater's film. 'A Scanner Darkly' hits the theatres July 7, 2006
Radiohead are either bored right now or cleaning up their iPhoto libraries, cause another batch of photos has been posted on Dead Air Space again. These are from their sessions in the studio this winter.
'Down Is The New Up' is the talk of the day. Of course, you read it here first that the song debuted at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto last night.
The song features Thom beatboxing at the start of the song. He moves on to play the piano. Halfway through the song Jonny even drums on the track. An mp3 of the song can be found at finefinemusic.com. YouTube.com has a couple of videos online: one, two, three.

PS: Just a random fact, but today we celebrate the third anniversary of the release of Hail To The Thief.
Radiohead played their second gig in Toronto at the Hummingbird Centre tonight. The band kicked off at 20:37 hrs (EDT) with 'The Gloaming'. New song, 'Down Is The New Up' premieres: Thom beatboxes, then moves to the piano, while Jonny remains on drums. According to our tour reporter, it's a "funky tune". The band heads off to Montreal, Quebec for the final two shows of their Canadian jaunt. Thanks to Philip for the live setlist updates from the venue.

Hampton Roads have an article on the listening party of The Eraser for the music press, with the unfortunate fact that the listening party actually debuted on the web earlier this week.
Adam Farrell, director of new media for XL's corporate parent Beggars Group, told asap that the leak was an inevitability that the label had accepted early on. "Given the nature of Radiohead's audience, and the history of their albums leaking, it has generally happened a lot earlier," he said. "Any label at this point expects that an album is going to get leaked. It definitely happened earlier than we had anticipated."
XL vice president of A&R Kris Chen was pleased with the event in spite of the leak. "We were aware that a lot of people wouldn't get to the hear the album very far in advance," he said, referencing the fact that the record itself was kept a secret from the industry until just three weeks ago. Chen explained that for XL, the party was a success if just because they were able to gather their choice of bloggers, writers, and record store owners to hear the fully mastered album, adding that the MP3s in circulation are poorly ripped and not indicative of the finished product's sound quality.
Farrell agreed that the listening party was successful, but conceded, "I think it would have had a lot more punch if it was truly the first time that anyone had listened to it, but my assumption is most people in the room last night had already heard the record."
Radiohead played their second gig at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby Philadelphia, taking the stage at 21:05 hrs (Eastern Standard Time).
'Go Slowly' made its North American debut, while 'The Gloaming' was played for the first time on the 2006 tour. Thom also performed an intro of Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush' just before 'Everything in its Right Place'. Thanks to tenacious z and Arianna for the live reports from the venue.
Pitchfork reviewed the first night of Radiohead's show at The Tower Theatre in Upper Darby (Philidelphia):
The diverse audience-- which ranged from young hipsters to crazy frats to a charmingly drunk middle-age woman who gyrated energetically throughout the show-- cheered when Yorke mumbled into the microphone, strapped on a guitar, or danced around the stage (plus, he's a game dancer, his goofiness kinda charming).
Radiohead has rarely failed to be on top of it before, but the question the group will have to face this time is whether it can be both comfortable enough to carry on and confrontational enough to matter. When the time comes to reveal the answer, the band had better get ready to have all eyes on it once again.
Another big surprise was their live arrangement of "Kid A." Stripping away the vocal effects, we finally get to really hear the great vocal melodies that were a little robotic on the album version. During the instrumental passage it was time for Yorke to get his dance on. This would not be the last time we'd see his flailing arms boogie. It really is great seeing him, along with the rest of the band, enjoying their time on the stage more and more with each tour.
In the new issue of Rolling Stone (USA), there's an interview with Thom Yorke on Radiohead and The Eraser. In the actual magazine, they also talk to Colin who says he would like to work some Eraser songs into the Radiohead set. [thanks Ari]
RS: The new Radiohead songs in your live show are surprisingly straightforward. Some of them are almost like garage rock. Are you rediscovering the joys of simplicity?
Thom: "We're trying not to get too fussy, which is obviously our tendency. We don't really listen to rock music. A lot of what we listen to is techno and dub. But essentially, it's dance music, and that's feeding back into us, in a crude way."
Looking back at Kid A and Amnesiac, it's as if you had too many options in front of you and tried to use them all.
"That's always the problem. My favorite tune from that time is "How to Disappear Completely," because we didn't care how it could be seen as pretentious or anything. It just sounds glorious. What Jonny did to it is amazing.
But I like that Liars record that just came out [Drum's Not Dead], because they're using loops and stuff we've been making for ages. It's cool that there's someone besides us saying, "We're a live band, but we also do this . . ."
Spin Magazine have announced an in-depth interview with Thom Yorke. Thom will also feature on the cover of the American magazine, which hits the shops on July 11th. This is the same date as the North American release of The Eraser [thanks Ari]
Stanley Donwood reveals a bit more about the artwork for Thom Yorke's The Eraser. As reported earlier the artwork is curently exhibitioned as 'London Views' at Lazarides in London.
Stanley: "This work was started in November 2005, whilst a record that was eventually called The Eraser was being worked on in Covent Garden, London. I didn't know that this would become the artwork that would accompany this record, although I hoped that it would, for several reasons too vague and tenuous to go into here. Which is one of the reasons why the record is called The Eraser and the artwork is called London Views.
The Tripwire already posted a review of Thom Yorke's The Eraser, which leaked less than 24 hours ago:
When I first caught wind of the news that Radiohead's frontman Thom Yorke was putting out a solo album, I am sure that many of you had similar thoughts running through your head. Can Yorke actually put together a coherent album of songs, or will he go off the electronica deep end and create a collage of bleeps and bloops in the vein of Squarepusher and Auctechre? As a huge fan of Radiohead, leaning towards an obsession, I was relieved when I heard the first seconds of the opening/title track. The Eraser is a beautifully crafted song-based album that will please any followers of Mr. Yorke.
