Radiohead live in Amsterdam (Night 2) - Live Report
Radiohead played the final show of the 2006 tour at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This was the reschulded show for the one the band had to cancel on May 10th.
The band kicked off with 'You And Whose Army?'. Radiohead also played more new songs than the accompanying festival shows, with 'Spooks' & 'Arpeggi' played for the first time since the Los Angeles shows. Thom was very talkative tonight, thanking Deerhoof, the crew and the unofficial Radiohead sites. They ended the 24 song set with 'Lucky'.
Encore 2:
Thom: "We like to say a couple of thank yous. Cause we're not going to be doing this again for a while. Or money runs out. We like to thank Deerhoof a lot. They're great to tour with. Excellent band. I saw them play the first gig in dublin. you should've seen the audience. It was brilliant. We'd very much like to thank our crew. they're officially the best crew in the world.
We'd very much like to thank everybody has been supporting us this tour listening to new stuff. The unoffical sites. If you want to listen to our new stuff, it's all there. This is not new. This is old".
22 Fake Plastic Trees
23 All I Need [Thom: "Ok we're doing one more new one. This one's called 'All I Need'"]
24 Lucky [Thom: "Thank you very much."]
Thanks to Adriaan for the live updates from the venue and eleven11 for updating the newspage while he's enjoying the show. Reviews can be e-mailed to adriaan@ateaseweb.com with 'Amsterdam 2' in the subject line.
In the mean time you can also check out some new pictures Jonny posted on DAS.
Tomorrow, Radiohead will play the final show of their 2006 tour. The gig at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam follows a series of European festival appearences.
Radiohead had to cancel their second Amsterdam show (fourth of the current tour), which was immediately rescheduled for August 28th. On this tour Radiohead played more than a dozen of new songs on both the European leg as well as the North American leg of the tour.
After taking a break in July, Radiohead returned in August to play festivals in Europe. Starting off in Hungary (Sziget Festival) and ending in Paris (Rock en Seine), Radiohead haven't played that many 'new songs' as they did on their non-festival shows, instead Creep returned to the setlist. So, what can we expect tomorrow?
Deerhoof will be supporting the band at the Heineken Music Hall. Radiohead are set to play at around 21:00 hours and will hopefully turn this into a great evening for all the people that had to rearrange their plans for the last minute cancellation in May.
Will we get the same festival set? Is Creep on the setlist? Are we getting a big batch of new songs? Any tracks from The Eraser? Or even rarely played old ones? Go ahead and speculate here.
And for some fresh pictures from the band, go here.
Radiohead are currently playing the Rock en Seine festival in Paris, France. This is the last of a series of festival performances. The band started with Airbag and ended with Karma Police. Creep was left out of the setlist this time. Videotape went slightly wrong in the beginning. The band were in a very good mood.
Thom Yorke was a guest on the Tom Robinson show at BBC 6Music last night. Apart from the interview Thom also played acoustic versions of The Clock and Cymbal Rush. Thom revealed that Radiohead's Bonnaroo perfomance is recorded and that it will come out eventually.
Thom said: "We did this festival called Bonnaroo. We did 2,5 hours. And there's 80,0000 people, admittedly they've been smoking the sticky green all day, probably wouldn't go anywhere anyway. It was just amazing. We played loads of new stuff. We did whole sections of quiet piano songs and it sounds like the most grotesque self-indulgent nonsense but it probably is my favourite gig for years and years and years. It was a really mellow evening. Actually it's all being filmed, but we're sitting on it because there's loads of new stuff on it. Because we're mean like that. It will come out eventually."
The other 6music interview with Thom Yorke (Monday, Steve Lamacq) is now available for download.

McSweeneys.net features several bedtime stories by Thom Yorke today. Well, not really Thom Yorke... but David Hart. Here's one of them:
The Happy Little Bunny
Once there was a little bunny who had a little furry tail and a little shiny nose. But the electrodeath cloud of commerce strangled it and its foxhole was converted to a parking lot, a parking lot, a parking lot. Ample parking asphalted over bunny bones. Everyone everyone everyone get in.
Help: A Day In The Life is being released in Canada on Sept 5th. The charity album's proceeds go to War Child. The compilation was released in the UK last year.
The Canadian version has a different line-up to the UK version but still features I Want None Of This by Radiohead. The album features exclusives by (in alphabetical order): Bedouin Soundclash, Bloc Party, Buck 65, City and Colour, Coldplay, Damien Rice, The Dears, Gorillaz, Jets Overhead, Kaiser Chiefs, Keane, Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, Emily Haines and James Shaw of Metric, Payolas, Radiohead, Sam Roberts, Surefire and The Weakerthans.
Thom Yorke did a couple of interviews and sessions yesterday. For those who missed it, they're all online now.
Triple J's Robbie Buck did an interview with Thom for Top Shelf, which you can download at the Triple J website.
For Xfm Thom did a session, playing tracks from The Eraser. Thom played Skip Divided and Analyse. An interview is also avaialable. Battering Room has the links.
The interview with Steve Lamacq on BBC 6music can heard here. Or check the message board for some mp3 downloads.
Lowlands festival organiser Eric van Eerderburg was interviewed in today's Dutch newspaper Parool. Eric, reviewing the past festival weekend, was asked about the differences between this years Pukkelpop (Belgium) and Lowlands (Netherlands) bills and apparently Radiohead were the missing link.
"(...) Radiohead were booked to play two gigs at V in England this year, and were looking to play a warm-up gig in the Europe mainland. We were in talks to book them on Friday, but the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium started on Thursday, giving the band the advantage of returning back to England a day earlier. So they chose to play Pukkelpop instead. Next year Radiohead will release a new album, and this time we WILL book them. (...)" [thanks Radiomad]
Creep... wasn't that the song Radiohead rarely plays at their live shows? The band included the track in the last three sets the past days. So, good timing for this article from Ajit over at Ticklebooth.
The article "The many faces of Creep" points to some interesting videos that use Radiohead's Creep. One video is of a baby who still is in his crib but is able to sing/scream/whine along with the song. There are also three separate videos remixing Phantom of the Opera with the song...
Radiohead played Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh Scotland tonight. They kicked off the two hour performance with 'Airbag'. New songs, 'Videotape', 'All I Need', and 'Bodysnatchers' were also included. Thom dedicated 'There There' to Johnny Marr. They finished off the 24 song set with 'Creep'.

It's not a secret anymore that the lyrics of Harrowdown Hill are about the death of Dr David Kelly. The Daily Record published some more quotes from Thom on the track, which will be out on single this Monday.
Dr Kelly had alleged the intelligence community's claim that Iraq could launch weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes had been fabricated after political pressure. He was then named by the MoD as the leak over a dodgy dossier on Iraq and Thom admits he decided to write the track from his album The Eraser as a response to the whisteblower's mysterious death.
Thom explained: "He was the chief expert on chemical weapons who went into Iraq, twice, the whistleblower. He's believed to have committed suicide, but the circumstances surrounding it were certainly painful and horrible, and there was an inquiry where they wanted to get to the bottom of it.
"Yet it being an inquiry in Britain, all those who were found responsible were not held responsible and remained blameless. The song was my response to it. I have never been so upset and angry with my country. I was upset with the Ministry of Defence in how they dealt with this man, and I think they should all rot."
Harrowdown Hill is where Kelly's body was found. Thom: "I think it was a mistake to call it Harrowdown Hill. I didn't think anyone would know that," Thom admitted. "You write something and then go, 'Oh God, oh no.' You can't go back then. It's all there.
But I guess it's my job to do that and apologise if anyone was hurt by it, but to also stand by it because that was my response to that situation which I found deeply dishonest."
Thom admits he would stop short of describing Kelly as a hero. "I wouldn't say that," he admitted. "I have no idea of the actual circumstances surrounding what did or did not go on. That's the trouble with it. I wouldn't say that he was anti-war, but he was questioning how things were being spun.
"It's one of those really odd things where I wrote half the lyrics before considering what I was writing about. It happened over a long period of time. By osmosis, these things were going on and they ended up in the tune. It was something that was extremely emotional at the time, and it couldn't help b being in the tune. But I didn't even realise the initial lyrics were about this until I looked at it further down the line."
Thom Yorke joins Steve Lamacq in the BBC 6music studio to talk about what has inspired him across the years, and particularly what took him towards his solo project The Eraser. He'll also be picking some tunes. Show airs this Monday August 21st at 16:00 hrs.

Australia's Sun-Herald have an interview published with Thom Yorke today. Thom talks about being a spokesman for Friends of the Earth when he doesn't even put bricks in his dunny or recycle properly.
"I have no integrity in these things, I haven't done enough," he laments.
It's no secret Radiohead disappeared a bit after their ambitious Hail To The Thief tour two years ago. "Everyone was having kids and we needed to get away from the whole Radiohead thing because it had become something we didn't understand any more," Yorke says.
"It wasn't much of a life any more . . . it was getting to be a bit of a drag, in a spoilt, white boy sort of a way. I felt we had become part of a very stale system - you know, band does record, record comes out, band goes on road, promotes record doing live gigs, plays lots of old songs, etc etc, record company does normal record company things, much bullshit is spoken, everybody goes home feeling a little bit dirty." [read it in full, thanks Dan]

Later on Thom posted this picture on Dead Air Space:
Will it ever stop? Radiohead seem to be an endless inspiration for all kinds of tributes. Just when you thought you've had them all, there's Skeet Spirit.
Skeet Spirit, A Crunk Tribute to Radiohead consists of 8 tracks including titles as No Sizzuruprises, Flamboastin' Android and Talk Show Hoes. Are you getting the idea? The tracks are produced by DJ GYNGYVYTUS. Nope, no late April Fools. It's all here for you to download for free. No keeping 'my mind on my dough' here.
Radiohead have just continued their tour. After a six week break, the band play the Sziget Festival festival in Budapest. The show is the first of a series of festival appearances.
The Radiohead set started at 21:00 hrs and the band kicked off with Airbag. There was a huge crowd seeing the band playing one encore, which they closed with Everything In Its Right Place. 15 Step & Nude were the only 'new' songs that were played. Bones wasn't on the setlist, but was added in the encore. Apparently this set was rehearsed at London's 'Bray Studios' on August 8th, as the setlist reveals.
Thanks to Henk and Mo Jo for the setlist. E-mail your reviews to reviews@ateaseweb.com with 'Sziget' in the subject line. Here's a short clip from the show. The full setlist is available in the Gigography. Next stop is Avenches in Switzerland, where the band will play Rock Oz'Arenes on Tuesday.
Rockabye Baby: Radiohead to be released this month
Radiohead will be next in the Rockabye Baby series. The album from Baby Rock Records features instrumental lullaby renditions of Radiohead tracks.
The label previously released similar albums with renditions of artists like Coldplay, Queen, Pink Floyd, Bjork and Nirvana. The Radiohead version will be out on August 29th and features the following tracks: No Surprises, Let Down, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Airbag, Paranoid Android, Knives Out, Karma Police, There There, Everything in Its Right Place, 2 + 2 = 5 and Sail to the Moon.
Baby Rock Records: "Rockabye Baby! transforms timeless rock songs into beautiful instrumental lullabies. The delicate sounds of the glockenspiel, vibraphone, and other instruments will lull your little one into a sweet slumber. These versions of Radiohead are sophisticated enough for people of all ages, but sweet enough to introduce your child to rock’s smartest band. Their album Kid A imagines the scope and power of music created by a newborn child. What will your baby dream about while drifting off to these serene interpretations of Radiohead’s best-loved songs?"
Pitchfork interviewed Thom Yorke, published today on their website. Thom talks about The Eraser, his fears and doubts, and his band's past, present, and future. About recording without a label and structure:
Thom: "You kind of just have to hang out for a while and focus on something, and once you've got past that the channels start opening back up again. Having done something that's not like [Radiohead] makes me realize how mad the group sort of dynamic is. It's not something you just take for granted and can switch on and off. It actually takes work and everybody wanting to do it."
Pitchfork: You're recording without deadlines, then-- or is Nigel imposing those?
Thom: "Yeah, we're meeting with him next week to talk about what the fuck to do [Laughs]. He picks up the pieces.
I don't know exactly what's going to happen [but] not having a label isn't a big deal. It was interesting doing something with XL because it's very mellow. There's no corporate ethic. All [major labels are] like that. Stupid little boys' games-- especially really high up."
Pitchfork: You matched The Eraser up to XL because you thought it was a good fit for that project. Are you going to try to make separate arrangements for each of your new records?
Thom: I guess so. I don't know. It's not such an important question whether we go with a major or an indie or whether we choose to completely do it ourselves. We haven't really talked about it lately, surprisingly enough.
We were talking about it a lot when we first stopped and we weren't working, but it ends up being just a pointless question unless, as you said, you've got something important and you have to get it out. Then you have to think about it.
It's funny that some people focus on that. When we stopped, I was really into the idea of trying to mess about trying to fuck with the system, whatever. The system's in collapse anyway. Just watch it go.
Some people talk about the internet, but we've always had a problem with [it], because it will always essentially be exclusive one way or the other. To assume that this technology is worldwide is kind of bollocks, y'know? It's not there in the same way. So, I mean, I also personally am one of these luddites. I want physically to have things. I want 12"s, and anyway, iTunes never has what I want."
Pitchfork: Kid A was obviously a huge success but it's not the type of thing the label wanted to try and sell-- was there any fear that if the first one didn't work out in their eyes, they'd make demands on Amnesiac?
Thom: At the time, it felt like it was a good idea to split them up. It was such an elongated period but it wasn't like, "They might not like that one, so we may need to come up with something a little bit easier" or any of that shit. It was all way beyond that. And we knew how tolerant they were. No, it's never been like that ever. Maybe on "High and Dry". I had my arm twisted on "High and Dry".
Pitchfork: To release it as a single?
Thom: To put it anywhere. [Laughs] It's not bad, you know. It's not bad...it's very bad. [Laughs]
Pitchfork: Are there any current bands with whom you feel any type of kinship?
Thom: There are bands I look up to. Like I look up to the Black Keys. I'm really excited about Deerhoof. Liars, they're fucking great. LCD Soundsystem. Modeselektor.
Ateaseweb.com was down since this morning due to a severe power outage at the server's data centre. Everything should be working again by now (or soon enough). Apologies for the incovenience.
People just can't keep stuff for themselves, now can they? Thom Yorke's new track 'The Drunkk Machine' has leaked.
The song is one of the b-sides from the forthcoming single release of Harrowdown Hill, which is scheduled for release on August 21st. Go on and be a good boy/girl and don't forget to buy the singles (3 formats for 5 pounds, remember?).

Thom: "We must throw Tony Blair out of office NOW"
Thom just posted a link on Dead Air Space to an article from Indy Media. The article covers the Israeli war on Lebanon, entitled 'Daddy why did Israel do this to us?' [read it here]
A bit later Thom posted a new entry:
(my personal opinion)
ive had enough of this
our government sitting on the fence with the US while world war 3 appears
to be breaking out in Lebanon and Northern Israel.
we must throw Tony Blair our of office NOW.
he does not represent the views of the british people.
he does not represent the views of his foreign office and officials.
he does not even represent the views of those in his cabinet.
he cares far too much about his relationship with Bush, and Murdoch.
this man is not fit to be our prime minister.
its a nice sunny day. come on lets do it. you know it makes sense.
