Beck puppets trash Radiohead hotel room

Beck was forced to apologise to Radiohead after his stage marionettes allegedly trashed the band's hotel room. Beck and his band have been joined onstage at recent shows by marionettes, each representing a band member, who copy the movements of their human counterparts.
The marionettes also star in a film between the end of the performance and the encore. Beck holds the puppets responsible after Radiohead found their hotel rooms trashed following the V Festival in the UK last month (August 6th), where they both appeared. Beck says, "Yeah, we apologised to Radiohead for that. But, y'know - what can we do? They're puppets."

Thom Yorke live from Nigel Godrich's Basement

Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich has turned his attention to TV. He's shooting a new series for British television called 'From the Basement,' with Thom Yorke performing live in the first episode.

Rolling Stone writes it will feature performances from an incredible line-up of musicians (and with no studio audience, albeit with some undisclosed visual accompaniment).

The first episode, which has already been shot, features the White Stripes, Thom Yorke, and Four Tet. The second, currently in production, will feature Beck and British artist Jamie Lidell. "I'm interested in the visual arts side of things, and somehow integrating that into what records have become," Godrich tells us, adding that "From the Basement" will be available as a video podcast in the coming weeks. "People don't buy albums so much because, as a medium, it's changing, so I'm just trying to figure out what it's changing into, and chasing after that."

Beck and Godrich worked together to create a video for each song on The Information, to be bundled with downloaded tracks and freely available on YouTube.com. Godrich says MTV has failed the video format. "MTV destroyed the art of music television, ironically," he says. "It took it, held it somewhere, and then actually destroyed it. It turned it into this news magazine. It's very shallow and uninteresting."

Thom Yorke on Mercury Prize broadcast at BBC 4

Thom Yorke will be performing live at the Mercury Prize awards show. The show hosted by Jo Whiley and Jools Holland host will be broadcast on BBC 4.

The show featuring live performances from Editors, Guillemots, Hot Chip, Zoe Rahman will be broadcast live on BBC 4 on Tuesday September 5th from 21:00 hrs to 22:30 hrs (and again from 00:15 to 01:45 hrs.

Thom Yorke is nominated for the Mercury Prize with his alabum The Eraser. Speaking of those awards. Mercury Music Prize nominees Hot Chip reckon Muse don't deserve to win the award because they are Radiohead rip-offs.

Hot Chip's 'The Warning' will compete with Muse's latest album 'Black Holes And Revelations' when the winner of the prestigious Mercury Prize is announced next week. But founding member Joe Goddard reckons the Reading and Leeds headliners are too unoriginal to merit the £20,000 prize money.

He told the Daily Star: "I'm not a fan of Muse. They sound like a lot of artists do - like another band. I find them a bit like Radiohead."
Goddard also had harsh word for Birmingham-based rockers Editors, whose debut LP 'The Back Room' is also in contention for the prize.

"I'm not a fan of Editors either," he added. "There's not much originality there. We don't want a punch up - they're probably lovely - but we're older and wiser and could take them on. I'd like Scritti Politti to win. He's been making music for a long time."

Stipe on Yorke's cheerless reputation

No idea where this came from, but Mr. Stipe was quoted on the World Entertainment News Network on Mr. Yorke.

Singer Michael Stipe has hit out at pal Thom Yorke's cheerless reputation, Insisting the Radiohead singer isn't as depressed as the press like to portray him.
The REM frontman is credited with helping Yorke cope with the weight of global stardom and feels he and the Creep hitmaker have both come under similar pressures, because of the type of music they play.
He says, "Thom in person is not as cheerless as the media like to portray him. We have suffered the same thing for years, just because my band's music leans towards the darker emotions.
"I'm happy to report that Mr Thom Yorke is a very happy and very well rounded and very smart person."
