Looking for Thom Yorke in Texas...

Suppose a search for 'Yorke' in the Last Name field returns too many results. You can additionally specify the first name, social security, date of birth, state, zip and license type to narrow the search results.

Well, apparently there's a Radiohead fan (yeah, let's stick with fan for now) at the Texas Department of Public Safety. Or did Thom move to Texas? [thanks Juliet]

global warming is an anti capitalist conspiracy?

From Dead Air Space:

global warming is an anti capitalist conspiracy?

yeah right

for people who prefer pseudo proof rather than the chilling reality of science,
for people who prefer the fantasy of conspiracies to watching the ice melting and feel the seas getting warmer
for people who would much rather find someone to blame

wakey wakey
rise and shine

bayoneting-a-scarecrow

"Why do I bother with these morons? Because they are destroying the movements which some of us have spent a long time trying to build. Those of us who believe that the crucial global issues – climate change, the Iraq war, nuclear proliferation, inequality – are insufficiently debated in parliament or congress; that corporate power stands too heavily on democracy; that war criminals, cheats and liars are not being held to account, have invested our efforts in movements outside the mainstream political process. These, we are now discovering, are peculiarly susceptible to this epidemic of gibberish.

The obvious corollorary to the belief that the Bush administration is all-powerful is that the rest of us are completely powerless. In fact it seems to me that the purpose of the “9/11 truth movement” is to be powerless. The omnipotence of the Bush regime is the coward’s fantasy, an excuse for inaction used by those who don’t have the stomach to engage in real political fights."

Eliza Lumley to release Radiohead cover album

Actress and Singer Eliza Lumley has recorded 10 Radiohead songs, which are soon to be released.

Eliza Lumley will release the album 'She Talks In Maths' with Jazzy interpretations of Radiohead songs like 'Black Star', 'Street Spirit' and 'How To Dissappear Completely'. These three songs are also available on her MySpace.

As reported two years ago here on At Ease, Eliza Lumley said: "It bothered me that the work I was singing was not the music I listen to; I thought, this can't be right." With that in mind, she began turning her attention to Coldplay, Radiohead and the like, on her way toward devising "the Radiohead project," as she bills her evening of song.

"It was a bit scary, because Radiohead are so popular. They're so cool and 'cred' in that sense, so it was a bit of a sacred cow to go into their work. I found amazing, amazing stuff," suited to what she calls her "contemporary classical" approach.

Her MySpace bio reads: "In her unique interpretation of 10 Radiohead songs, Eliza Lumley has created a beautiful and surprising blend of the classical and the contemporary. The recordings jump effortlessly from the dreamy Cocteau Twins landscape of 'Let Down' to the angular challenge of the Ryuichi Sakamoto inspired 'How To Disappear Completely', from the subtle jazz of 'Black Star' to the sparse piano of 'Street Spirit' which invokes echoes of Michael Nyman. The brave, minimalist approach reveals the angular humanism of Thom Yorke's achingly reductive world-view. It turns out that in the hands of Eliza Lumley's pure vocal sound, his lyrics become a fragile tragedy in the key of life that only the epiphany of this setting truly exposes."

Thom Yorke joins Trident protest

Dozens of top British bands and musicians today joined forces to oppose the multi-billion pound replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system.

A statement was issued on their behalf, warning that ordering a new generation of nuclear weapons would make the world a more dangerous place.

Signatories included Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Super Furry Animals and Supergrass.

Kaiser Chiefs & Sparklehorse on 'Radiohead tea'

Kaiser Chiefs' frontman Ricky Wilson talks to The Times about their follow-up to their debut album. Kaiser Chiefs have returned with an album of more pop songs.

"Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Radiohead way of doing things," ponders Wilson. "They probably torture themselves over making a cup of tea. Which is fine. In life, there are people who torture themselves over making a cup of tea. And they end up making amazing cups of tea. But . . ."

He turns to his bandmates for assistance. As befits a true songwriting foil, Hodgson is swift to oblige. "There are different ways of making cups of tea, aren't there? We love the taste of Radiohead's tea."

Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous talked to the Northwest Herald on their latest record and mentioned Radiohead when he mentioned their producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton):

I've toured with Radiohead in the past and we like the same electronic music. They started to incorporate more of that in their recent records, starting with "Kid A." I wanted to do it in the arena of short, pop songs. I tried to articulate what I wanted to Brian.

Thom on nuclear energy

Thom Yorke posted on Dead Air Space, with a link to a Guardian article. "i just been reading this: 'Grave Errors'". Later on, Thom posted some more on the subject:

dump nuclear http://www.million-against-nuclear.net/

nuclear power is not going to solve our problems now anymore than it has in the past.
it is only able to exist with heavy public subsidy, and a monumental turning a blind eye to the consequences by both our governments and us.
this is the nuclear industrys last ditch attempt to save itself from extinction.
much as the GM companies claim that they can save world hunger with modified foods the nuclear lobby claims to be able to solve our energy needs.
but its bullshit.

thats just what i think anyway.

Win 'Jonny Greenwood is the Controller'

As you know, Jonny Greenwood's compilation for Trojan is out this week in the UK and available in North America March 6th. Listen to an mp3 of one of the tracks over at Fine Fine Music.

2007 marks the 40th anniversary of Trojan Records. As a fervent fan of reggae music, Greenwood collaborated with Trojan Records to pull recordings from the extensive legendary catalog. After 6 months of endless listening, he narrowed down his choices to 17 crucial tracks of essential reggae listening. The set features renowned vocalists, musicians and producers including Desmond Dekker, Lee Perry, Gregory Isaacs, Sly & Robbie, King Tubby, Scientist and many others.

And we have some copies available for you to win! To enter, answer this question: "Desmond Dekker & The Aces appear on 'Jonny Greenwood Is The Controller' with their 1968 single 'Beautiful & Dangerous' but what was Desmond Dekker's only UK No.1 single?"

You might want to check the Trojan Website for hints. E-mail your answer to adriaan@ateaseweb.com with 'Trojan competition' in the subject line.

And the winner is...

...James Morrison. Yep, After missing out on a Grammy, Thom Yorke failed to win the award for the Best British Male act at the 2007 Brit Awards. Well, maybe the NME awards are something for Thom?

Speaking of NME... The magazine reports today that Radiohead might be playing the Oxygen Festival (July 7 & 8) & T in the Park. Well, who knows? BTW, remember this?

Christina Aguilera, Nirvana and Radiohead

Speaking at the Grammy Awards, Christina Aguilera confessed she listens to Radiohead when having sex.

Her own music is a turn-off when she is having sex with husband Jordan Bratman. Christina explained, "I'd be too busy analyzing my own voice. I get very nitpicky. I like listening to Thom Yorke from Radiohead. That's good sexy-time music."

And over at RollingStone.com you can fight about the best album of the nineties: Nirvana's 'Nevermind' or Radiohead's 'OK Computer'. Post your thoughts here or on the message board.

Speaking of Rolling Stone magazine; In their article 'The Top 20 New Guitar Gods", Ed O'Brien & Jonny Greenwood were mentioned with 'Bangers 'n Mash' as an essential performance.

Deerhoof on Radiohead's influence on their new LP

Deerhoof talked to NME about Radiohead's influence on their new album 'Friend Opportunity', which is now out in North America and will be released in Europe in March.

Drummmer Greg Saunier described the effect tour mates Radiohead had on the mixing of the recently released 'Friend Opportunity' album, done while the two bands were on the road together last year.

He explained: "If you can imagine coming home from a Radiohead concert and 20,000 people are all in tears and everyone loves it...you turn on your rough mix and it sounds garbage in comparison.

"It sounds like nothing in every way; the sound is not as good, the emotion seems so dim and the overall power of it doesn't connect. That feeling, while depressing at first was such a great help in a way, to be devastated by music again...that's how we felt."

Saunier discussed the approach his band took to their music after touring with Thom Yorke and co.

He stated: "It's not that we ever wanted to imitate Radiohead's music, but we did want to do something that sounded good AFTER Radiohead. In other words Radiohead put out 'Amnesiac' - what's somebody going to do, not to top it but to respond it as if in a musical conversation? We treated it like a question, a call to which we wanted to respond in the music world."

Also see the story where Greg talked about touring with Radiohead here.

Thom Yorke misses out on awards

Thom Yorke was nominated with 'The Eraser' at this year's Grammy Awards. However, Gnarls Barkley won the award for Best Alternative Album as announced tonight at the Grammy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles.

On Saturday Thom already missed out on a Plug Award. At New York's Irving Plaza, Sufjan Stevens won in the 'Male Artist Of The Year' category at the Plug Awards.

On a positive note, Mr. Yorke's 'The Eraser' did win a Plug Award in the Dance/Electronic album category... and also an award for 'Best Electronic Album' at the Playboy Awards. Hooray!?

Oh, and Radiohead were awarded with the Best show in The Netherlands at the NightLiveXS Awards for their performance at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam last year.

Pre-order your copy of Radiohead's LP7...

...or not? Amazon is listing the new Radiohead album for release on August 6th 2007 through EMI.

Maybe nothing to take too seriously, but the first actual date that has popped up since recordings for the new album started or whatever they're doing over there. For now, we just call the album 'No Image Available'... pre-order here if you dare. [ta fakephil]

Update: A spokesperson for Radiohead has denied their album will be released on August 6 despite Amazon listing that release date.

Noel Gallagher's back!

In an interview with The Guardian, Noel Gallagher (Oasis) had some more words left for Thom Yorke:

"Thom Yorke sat at a piano singing, 'This is f***ed up' for half an hour. We all know that, Mr Yorke. Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit there twiddling, going, 'We're all doomed', at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play Creep. Get over it."

Good to have you back Noel...Oh, and Thom just posted the following on Dead Air Space:

Kingdom Come

"The economy is rolling along an endless plateau, and consumers are bored with the view. Something strange is needed to get them to sit up."

"The consumerist society is a kind of soft police state. We think we have a choice, but everything is compulsory. We have to keep buying or we fail as citizens."

"The danger is that consumerism will need something close to fascism in order to keep growing."

"We're like bored children. We've been on holiday for too long, and we've been given too many presents."
