Classical conductors on Radiohead & Greenwood

Not only Ronen Givony is going to perform Jonny Greenwood's classical work. Justin Brown, the music director and principal conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has planned a performance next season as well.

Justin Brown told Birminham's City Paper: "Greenwood is a classically trained musician, and there are some serious classical influences with Radiohead's music that are not obvious". Jonny Greenwood held a position with the BBC in 2004 as its composer-in-residence, taking the opportunity to compose several pieces that were later performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in London.

Over lunch, Brown discussed a specific bass line he had heard on Radiohead's OK Computer album. While sitting at the piano on another occasion, he realized the complicated structure of that song had been lifted from an 1853 orchestral arrangement. "It was note-for-note and in the same key, which was just incredible," he said. "There are many examples where today's contemporary music can trace its roots back to classical arrangements, and that is where we can obviously make a connection with younger audiences. Our performance of Jonny Greenwood's work will probably be the best example in this new series.""

Radiohead (specifically 'OK Computer') was also discussed in brief by the Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen in the most recent New Yorker (April 30th).

Alex Ross writes that Salonen, the conductor of the L.A. Philharmonic, was "deeply impressed by Radiohead's 1997 album 'OK Computer,' and once went out for drinks with members of the band." He later states that Salonen "remains open to the idea that a pop album could floor him as 'OK Computer' did, and wants to unleash similar foces in his own music, a mixture of the brainy and the visceral."

Radiohead News In Brief

More news from the covers & remixes front. On May 15, Decemberist guitarist Chris Funk will release 'Plastic Bag' by the Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble. The album will feature a number of covers including Radiohead's 'Morning Bell'... the Amnesiac version.

An Ellen Allien remix of Thom Yorke's 'Harrowdown Hill' will be out on Fabric 34, a compilation album to be released on June 26.

Radiohead's 'Idioteque' is included on Modeselektor's 'Boogy Bytes Vol. 3', released on BPitch Control.

Friends Of The Earth & minor Radiohead update

A message from Thom on Dead Air Space regarding Friends Of The Earth and a bit of an update on the band's progress on LP7.

this is for uk peeps only im afraid.

the british government is drawing up a climate change law..
committing us to reducing our co2 emmissions.
this is something i am helping friends of the earth uk campaign for.
(as well as working long hours with radiohead on these songs we've got which you may know about.)

if you got involved as well then thank you.. on behalf of us all...
(it is amazing what letters still can do.)
anyway
as is always the way..the bill at the moment is not quite what it should be, to say the least
as they seem to have forgotten about planes and ships..amongst other things.
there is a lot of column inches and internet space and conversation taking place about all this as you know on the subject of climate change.
and it all runs the risk of reaching saturation point. except that it is potentially the most terrifying problem the human world has ever had to face..
doing our bit.. flying less, etc etc (all those column inches) will not really have any effect unless the uk as a whole decides without excuses and backtracking that we want to really do something..
unless all of us accepts a law that we all must adhere to...
that has the desired effect rather than creating an illusion..

so if you can be arsed you can take part in saying what you think the bill should contain
this is a public consultation, as the government calls it
(except when it's about nuclear power..)

there is a page on the FOe website at the moment where you can do this
HERE!

radiohead starts up again having finally caught up on some sleep next week
i have a cd of what we;'ve been up to...
and you haven't.
yet.
(sorry)

i must listen to it, after taking an ear break
that always makes me nervous
hope you're well

yours

Thom

Greenwood & Yorke News In Brief

As read in the New Yorker, there is a North American premiere coming up of Jonny Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver. The classical piece will be played as part of Ronen Givony's Wordless Music series. This will be the second time the piece will be performed by a full orchestra.

In the London Paper, Spank Rock listed his favourite songs and mentioned Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser' (the song) and said a remix is coming up: "We just did a remix of this track. It's not out yet but we've taken a really good song and made it sexy"

Channel 4 teletext reports on Cajun Dance Party saying they signed to XL Records after a chance meeting with Thom Yorke in a clothes shop.

"I bumped into him, totally random, the week before we met XL," Daniel Blumberg told Teletext. "Thom's solo album was on XL, and he said they were perfect." The singer added: "Thom told me we were going to get loads of attention, and XL were perfect at shielding us from industry bullshit."

Blue Man Group member Wes Day postd his iPod top 5 on al.com: 3. Radiohead. "I love Thom Yorke's voice and the great songwriting. 'The Bends' is the ultimate."

Radiohead post '15 Step' sample

Radiohead have posted a very short sample of new song '15 Step' on Dead Air Space today.

As opposed to earlier reports in the media, which considered the old Vapour Brothers footage as 'new material', this is actually the first clip of recognizable new stuff.

Be warned, it's not much... but you can hear parts of the 15 Step lyrics 'You used to be alright / What happened?' when you click on 'HODIAU DIREKTION' at Dead Air Space. HODIAU DIREKTION's content changes daily. So let's hope we will hear some more in the near future.

Thom goes on and on and on...

...................."Last year the top climate scientist at NASA, James Hansen, reported that his bosses were trying to censor his lectures, papers and web postings. He was told by public relations officials at the agency that there would be “dire consequences” if he continued to call for rapid reductions in greenhouse gases(12)..........

Com Lag (2Plus2IsFive) EP set for re-release

Besides the earlier reported re-releases of Radiohead's 'Airbag/How Am I Driving EP' and Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser', the Com Lag EP will be back in the shops as well.

The 'Com Lag (2Plus2IsFive) EP' was released in Japan and Australia, back in 2004. This was the last Radiohead release and it seems like ages ago. Anyway, this version will be out in the UK on April 16th and in North America on May 8th. Order the items at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com. [thanks Nathen & Idan]

An Easter weekend of Radiohead covers

Besides Eliza Lumley's Radiohead cover album this week, some more Radiohead covers were sent in this week.

Guitarist Jon Gomm has recorded a cover of 'High and Dry' for his debut album "Hypertension". A clip of the song is available from his website. Watch a video here.

Jan De Campenaere from Belgium played Radiohead's 'Fake Plastic Trees' with his band Venus In Flames on a regular basis already, but for one project he played a 45 minute set of Radiohead songs. One of them was 'Idioteque', acapalla. Listen to his version on the band's MySpace.

The Chuck Kerr Quintet, a local jazz ensemble in San Antonio, Texas, has posted an mp3 of a live jazz version of "Knives Out" on MySpace. It was performed live at St. Mary's University in San Antonio as part of Chuck's senior recital.

Paradigm did a Radiohead tribute for Halloween this year. The show is on the Live Music Archive. There's also a video available of 2+2=5, which you can check here.

And since we're doing covers today, check out Dublin based Radiohead cover band Karma Police. 'High And Dry' and 'The Bends' are available on their MySpace.

...and back to the real Radiohead. A picture was posted on Dead Air Space with Phil on congas. Makes you wonder...

Stanley Donwood working at his desk

Stanley is probably working on his upcoming masterpiece. Stanley Donwood was also featured in MOJO Classic's 'The Greatest Album Covers Of All Time'.

Inside you can find his work for Radiohead and Thom Yorke and an interview with Stanley. Some of the quotes:

"I don't ever want to feel as I did while making the artwork to Kid A"

(...)

"I would never dream of foisting my musical notions upon Radiohead. In return they seem content to allow me to indulge my frentic interpretations. Although if they ever read this, of course, that may change..."

Eliza Lumley's 'She Talks in Maths' out now

As reported earlier, Eliza Lumley has recorded her album 'She Talks in Maths: Rediscovering Radiohead'. The album with 10 Radiohead interpretations is now available on iTunes.

Besides the earlier mentioned preview of 4 tracks on her MySpace, there is also an exclusive track ('Karma Police') available at Fine Fine Music. The full album is available for download at iTunes, which already topped the Jazz chart of Apple's music store.

Eliza Lumley: "I was a choral scholar at Cambridge, doing Palestrina, Tallis and Byrd, and I think that style suits the Radiohead material really well. The lyrics are so fantastic; quite hard and angular - and the music is so beautiful when it's stripped bare. I think I've discovered other sides to the songs in the process. Not that they're better than the originals in any way!" she hastens to add.

But why Radiohead? "After Cambridge I studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music, and was very interested in cabaret and jazz - Rodgers and Hart and all those wonderful songs. But I felt slightly estranged from the music I was listening to, and discovering. just being a student at the time; which I suppose was indie-rock. So, I started to experiment with that."

Full tracklisting is as follows:

1 High and Dry
2 Black Star
3 Street Spirit
4 Let Down
5 No Surprises
6 Karma Police
7 Lucky
8 How to Disappear Completely
9 Creep
10 Bullet Proof.. I Wish I Was
